‘Star Wars’: Every Lightsaber Colour Meaning Explained

The iconic lightsabers of the Jedi and Sith are among the most recognizable objects in all of science fiction. From the moment these colourful blades first appeared in 1977’s ‘Star Wars: A New Hope‘, they have defined the saga like no other weapon. There are eight official and canon lightsaber colours that have significance attached to them. Each represents certain Force traditions, philosophies, or the nature of their wielder. Some are more common than others, but all provide unique insight into the characters who carry them. So let’s get to know the meaning behind each color and a few prominent wielders as well.

Sentinels such as Rey preferred yellow to represent their blend of Guardian combat ability, Consular knowledge, and focus on serving people individually over large institutions.

Jedi like Rey and Temple guards who carried double-bladed yellow weapons emphasized protecting knowledge and individuals. Rey’s new yellow blade in ‘The Rise of Skywalker‘ symbolizes her mission to uphold ideals learned from lost Jedi teachings while defending what’s important to her.

The rare violet blade has a deep symbolic resonance. Few achieved Mace Windu’s synthesis of light and dark perspectives, resisting temptation through understanding both, represents balance.

His lightsaber distinguished the Jedi Master’s ability to withstand dark temptations while continuing philosophical study. Only a legendary warrior perfectly balancing such polarizing influences could wield a purple sword.

It remains one of the most enigmatic colours in the franchise. Fun fact, Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Mace Windu, asked George Lucas specifically to have a purple lightsaber so he could stand out in the battle sequences.

Originating in ‘Legends’, orange was once wielded by mysterious Force wielders outside the Jedi and Sith groups like Baylon Skoll. Though rare, its recent appearances in ‘The Mandalorian‘ and ‘Ahsoka‘ series have sparked much debate.

Showrunner Dave Filoni confirmed these were indeed orange, implying a connection to the mysteries of the Force that defies categorization. As with its previous users, orange hints at a complex relationship between the light and the dark.

The one-of-a-kid Darksaber stands alone with its distinctive flat black hole. Once wielded by the first Mandalorian Jedi, it has special significance as a symbol of ruling Mandalore passed down through its clans.

Its unusual properties and the mental connection needed to wield it properly set it apart from all other lightsabers, making it the most unique and special.

Former Jedi like Ahsoka purified red crystals through spiritual methods to create her unique white blades. She chose white to represent fighting for her beliefs, independent of any institutions after leaving the Jedi Order. The Sith forever changed the red lightsaber’s meaning when they corrupted Kyber crystals to create synthetic variants emitting the crimson hue in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. The red lightsabers have been a cult classic for over four decades now.

Lords of the dark side such as Darth Vader, Maul, and Kylo Ren wielded reds to signify their fall to the dark side and Sith allegiance. The colour instilled fear through its association with tyrannical users over the centuries. Rituals involving the dark side bled natural crystals or used artificially made ones to craft intimidating red blades.

2. Blue Lightsaber

Blue blades have been long wielded by Jedi Guardians who demonstrated excellence with both lightsaber combat and the Force. Heroes like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Rey Skywalker all employed the blue lightsaber to signify their defensive skills and willingness to serve on the front lines. Jedi Guardians skillfully incorporated Force talents like telekinesis during battles.

The blue colour also helped establish characters as formidable opponents. For example, Obi-Wan’s skilled martial arts and Force techniques posed a serious threat to villains. Jedi who actively defended the Republic through fighting generally chose a blue-hued weapon to denote their Guardian role.

1. Green Lightsaber

Jedi like Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda, and Luke Skywalker favoured a green lightsaber as it represented their dedication to a more contemplative study of the Force through teaching and exploration of its mysteries.

Where blue blades saw frequent action, green symbolized Jedi Consulars who sought a deeper understanding of the Force through philosophy, wisdom, and challenging orthodox views. Qui-Gon and Yoda used their greens to question the status quo. Luke continued this tradition as a Jedi Master guiding new students.
