For longtime fans, ‘The Boys‘ conclusion should be a celebration. Instead, it’s leaving a lot of unanswered questions, particularly for ‘Gen V’.

With the announcement of ‘Gen V’s cancellation, a lot of people were hoping that the last few episodes of ‘The Boys’ would be a fitting farewell for the Godolkin students. However, showrunner Eric Kripke has confirmed that the younger heroes’ stories were purposefully left open-ended because there were originally larger plans for them following ‘The Boys’.

The lack of a big confrontation between Marie Moreau was one of the biggest issues that arose with the finale. Since season 1 of ‘Gen V, ’ it was assumed that she was being groomed to become a future weapon against Homelander. Rather, Kripke said, Marie just wasn’t ready.

She has all of this power, and everyone online is like, ‘Well, why doesn’t she just go take on Homelander?’ I’m like, ‘She’s a 19-year-old kid! She has no idea how to wield any of it in any sort of responsible, controlled way,” he told TVline. The explanation makes sense from a storytelling point of view.

Marie is still a teenager, struggling to understand powers that might easily go out of control. If she were to go up against a person as powerful as Homelander, she’d likely end up losing. Yet, there’s an emotional frustration to it now as audiences know that they may never see that growth come to fruition on screen.

‘The Boys’ didn’t leave threads lying around by chance; it was purposefully done to create future arcs that could no longer occur. That’s a hard pill to swallow for fans who invested in characters like Marie, Jordan, Emma, and Andre.

The Cancellation Changes The Finale’s Emotional Weight

The real problem is that Kripke sounded quite displeased about the cancellation. He said that they had more adventures planned for the ‘Gen V’ cast and the producers “made a lot of effort” to keep the series alive. That adds a layer of bittersweet feeling to the franchise’s end.

Instead of feeling like a complete conclusion to this universe, the finale now risks feeling like the closing chapter of a story that still has missing pages. The emotional responses of the cast only amplify that feeling.

Where the Boys universe goes from here is up for debate. However, for many, it’s difficult not to feel like ‘Gen V’ should’ve had a proper ending instead of a promise that may never come true.
