“Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen; two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other,” she shared.
Instead of pushing the pair through another painful breakup or shocking tragedy, the Grey’s Anatomy creator revealed that the team wanted to leave their relationship in a healthier place.
“It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” Rhimes added, strongly hinting that the series intentionally closed their chapter once the writers felt their journey had come full circle.

McKidd admitted the show changed his life in many ways. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously,” he shared. “As that chapter comes to a close, I’m looking forward to what’s ahead — building new work, telling new stories, and taking everything I’ve learned into the next phase of my career.”
Raver also became emotional while discussing her exit. In her Instagram tribute, Raver made it clear how much the role meant to her. “Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart,” she wrote.
She also reflected on how the opportunity first came into her life years ago. “Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers.”
