For years, ‘Hannah Montana‘ fans have looked back at the Disney Channel finale as one of the more emotional and satisfying endings of that era. After four seasons of double lives, friendship drama, family moments, and pop-star chaos, Miley Stewart finally made a choice that felt true to the heart of the show.

But as it turns out, that ending was not always guaranteed. According to ‘Hannah Montana‘ writer and co-creator Michael Poryes, the show had another possible ending on the table, and it would have changed everything fans believed about the show.

Miley Cyrus Had The Final Say In ‘Hannah Montana’s Ending

Michael Poryes opened up about the show’s finale on the Magical Rewind podcast, where he revealed that the creative team had been considering two different endings for ‘Hannah Montana‘. One was the ending fans eventually saw. That’s where Miley gives up the movie in Paris and chooses to go to college with Lilly. The other was a dream-style ending inspired by ‘The Wizard of Oz‘.

He said, “I wanted Miley to go to college, to show that fame isn’t everything, but Disney wanted to make it all a dream where Miley Cyrus wakes up and realizes the entire show was a dream. We even filmed that version with her real parents. The person who had the ultimate choice was Miley.”

Poryes made it clear that he did not support that idea. He said, “It would have been unfair to the fans who had invested years into the show, its characters, and Miley’s journey.” He explained, “The dream ending failed to respect the audience“. Fans had followed Miley Stewart through her struggles, friendships, secrets, and growth. Reducing all of that to a dream would have made the entire story feel pointless.

Eventually, the decision came down to Miley Cyrus. The showrunners gave her the power to choose which ending felt right, and she sided with Poryes. Miley said, “If Michael wants it that way, I support Michael,’ and Disney changed it. She was 16… Most stars wouldn’t do that at 16, but she did.”

The Dream Ending Would Have Changed Everything Fans Loved About The Show

The alternate ending may have sounded good, but it would have been a risky move for a show like ‘Hannah Montana‘. The series was not just about a girl living a secret pop-star life. It was also about friendship, family, growing up, and figuring out who you really are when the world expects different versions of you.

That is why the actual finale worked so well. Miley choosing Lilly over the movie in Paris showed how much she had grown. She had spent years trying to balance fame with a normal life, and by the end, she understood what made sense most to her. The finale gave her a mature choice and allowed fans to feel that her journey had led to something meaningful.

The dream ending, on the other hand, would have undone that growth. If everything had been only a dream, Miley’s friendship with Lilly, her bond with her brother Jackson, her lessons from Robby Ray, and her struggles as Hannah Montana would not have carried the same emotional weight. It would have turned the show into a fantasy that never truly belonged in its own world.

The twist can work in some stories, but for ‘Hannah Montana‘, it would have felt like a betrayal. The audience had grown up with Miley Stewart. They had watched her make mistakes, learn lessons, and slowly understand the cost of living two lives. Ending the show by saying it was all imagined would have taken away the sincerity that made the finale memorable.

Even though the dream ending never became the official finale, it did not disappear completely. The alternate version was released as part of the DVD extras, along with behind-the-scenes material, and it has been available to watch on YouTube for years.
