‘House of the Dragon‘ is one of the most popular television shows of 2022. Based on parts of George R. R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen and their civil war of succession, also called the Dance of the Dragons.
One of the characters, Aegon, just became the spotlight in the penultimate episode of the show. Tom Glynn-Carey, talked about portraying the lazy and sinister new King of Westeros and the comparison people have been drawing between Aegon and Joffrey Baratheon.
‘House Of The Dragon’ Actor Tom Glynn-Carey Talks About Aegon
In episode nine titled ‘The Green Council‘ of the prequel series, Westeros gets a new King. Aegon is crowned as the King of the Seven Kingdom. There’s a subdued malevolence in his personality that’s been noticed by viewers.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Glynn-Carney who plays the selfish addict talks about the Joffrey comparison. “Ryan and Miguel said if we could make any comparisons to [Thrones characters], that he’s the closest to Joffrey,” he said.
Tom added, “However, he is not an out-and-out psychopath. He’s much more complex. His decisions are due to insecurities and confusion and rage. He’s just bitterly confused and mentally unwell.”
The actor talked about the character being defenseless. “As much of a nightmare as Aegon is and how he plays against any form of rules and discipline, he’s pretty defenseless,” he said. “He’s so reliant on alcohol that he’s a confused, tangled mess of a man who doesn’t yet know himself. He’s incapable of making decisions that aid him.”

Tom Talks About Aegon’s Introduction Scene
The adult Aegon is introduced after he has raped a servant girl. His mother intervenes and tells the servant to disappear. “That’s a harsh introduction for any character,” Tom said.
“There are questions about whether his heart is in the right place, if he’s a psychopath, or if he’s just confused“, he added. “It’s tricky because, as an actor, you want the audience to be on your side at least a little.”
He further said: “But when I start from there, how am I going to get the audience to connect with me — at least a little bit — as I move through the story?”
Tom also spoke to two actors from GOT, Alfie Allen and Kit Harington. “I spoke to Kit, very briefly, about it,” he said. “He talked about how the world itself is massive and to remember that you are just a tiny cog of a huge machine — and it’s reassuring to think about it like that.”
