‘House of the Dragon‘ is the talk of the season ever since it started airing. The HBO series is set around 200 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones.’ All the episodes have received critical praise which has led HBO to renew it for a second season.
There are several interesting characters in the show that have become fan favorites. One of them is Daemon Targaryen, a character with several shades. Writer and executive producer Sara Hess and director Clare Kilner recently talked about how Daemon has become desirable.
‘House Of The Dragon’ Creators Talk About Daemon
Daemon Targaryen (played by Matt Smith) has become a fan favorite since the first episode aired. His recent actions, which include him supporting his ailing brother to reach the throne and killing a man who disrespected his wife, are adored by people.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s writer and executive producer Sara Hess and director Clare Kilner opened up about him. “He’s become internet boyfriend in a way that baffles me“, Hess said.
She continued, “Not that Matt isn’t incredibly charismatic and wonderful, and he’s incredible in the role. But Daemon himself is … I don’t want him to be my boyfriend! I’m a little baffled how they’re all, ‘Oh, daddy!’ And I’m just like: ‘Really?’ How — in what way — was he a good partner, father or brother — to anybody? You got me. He ain’t Paul Rudd.”
Kilner, said, “I just love the fact people are so involved with these characters, and I think that’s part of the fun of it”. He further added that they aren’t surprised. “Matt is such a risk-taker in his performances and he’s got that little smile and, you know … you can’t help it! He is charismatic. People love a baddie. But I don’t think he’s particularly a good father or a good brother.”
Aegon’s Comparison With Joffrey Baratheon
Kilner also talked about Aegon Targaryen, the new king of Westeros. “I’m always on the side of the character” he said. “But for character, we are very sympathetic towards him because we were very conscious that we didn’t want him to be Joffrey [Baratheon from ‘Game of Thrones‘]. He’s not a sadist.”
Tom Glynn-Carey, who plays the character, also talked about the comparison. “Ryan and Miguel said if we could make any comparisons to [Thrones characters], that he’s the closest to Joffrey,” he said.
He continued, “However, he is not an out-and-out psychopath. He’s much more complex. His decisions are due to insecurities and confusion and rage. He’s just bitterly confused and mentally unwell.”
