‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 has brought one of its most surprising developments yet, and it could drastically change the future of the Green faction in the Dance of the Dragons.
In Episode 4, it’s revealed that Helaena Targaryen is pregnant, adding a huge new twist to the situation and increasing the stakes for all who are competing for the Iron Throne. More importantly, it creates fresh uncertainty for both the Greens and Rhaenyra as the brutal civil war continues.
Helaena’s Pregnancy Could Change Everything For The Targaryens

Showrunner Ryan Condal said that Helaena’s pregnancy is not just an emotional shock but also a major political one. Helaena is already in a very precarious situation as Rhaenyra’s prisoner. However, as the unborn child is a legitimate heir to the Iron Throne, it’s a very dangerous situation.

“Helaena being pregnant is a major complication for her, given the fact that she’s literally in Rhaenyra’s shadow and her captive. And if that child is a boy, it’s going to be very problematic for both Rhaenyra and for her, and for Alicent,” he told IGN.
The child would strengthen the Greens’ claim and create a dilemma for Rhaenyra, who must consider the threat posed by yet another Targaryen heir while also dealing with the moral consequences of the conflict.
The reveal also seems to bring back an important element from Fire & Blood in a new way, following recent story changes in the show. The series is not just a rehash of the book. It’s taking some of the concepts and making them their own.
‘House Of The Dragon’ Just Handed The Greens A Major New Weapon In The Succession War

The pregnancy is not the only factor bringing the Greens back to life. The faction has suddenly gained renewed hope with another potential heir joining the fray, after losing many battles during the war. However, that hope comes with enormous danger. Every new Targaryen claimant increases the political tension and makes peace even less likely.

Circumstances have already gotten the better of Helaena, and now she has to deal with a future that may be the deciding factor in Westeros’ fate. When asked about this storyline, Ryan Condal suggested that it is meant to preserve some of the key elements of the source material.
“So it felt like a way to keep alive certain threads in the book in a way that sort of suited the plot, I think, and the story that we’re telling here in our version, our adaptation of The Dance of the Dragons.” That means that the repercussions of this revelation will likely be far-reaching beyond Season 3.
This unexpected pregnancy could be one of the biggest plot twists of the season, and one that could alter the future of the Greens and the Iron Throne.
