Something is really wrong with Mother’s Milk this season, and it’s not just the stress or bad circumstances. ‘The Boys’ season 5 depicts the man who used to be the emotional glue of the team as someone who is slowly fading away.
Not physically, but mentally, something has changed in a manner that is difficult to overlook.
MM’s New Attitude In ‘The Boys’ Season 5 Is Concerning

Mothers Milk has been the anchor of the group over the years. When others were turning round and round, he remained on his feet. He questioned rash choices, confronted Billy Butcher, and reminded them that there was a line that they should not cross. This is why his actions are so dissonant now. He is no longer holding back; he is leaning in.

The very man who fought to save lives is now supporting the schemes that may ruin lives, including allies. Initially, he appeared to be hardened by his experiences in prison. It would have been logical. But the reality is more. MM has not only grown more cynical, but he has also lost hope. He confesses that he has resigned to his death and that he believes his family would be better off without him.
That’s not toughness. That’s resignation. And it transforms all things. There’s something grim in that transition. You are not witnessing a hero turning ruthless; you are witnessing a person who stops believing that they deserve to be alive.
MM Has A Dangerous Mindset Heading Into The Endgame

Such a way of thinking not only impacts MM, but it also transforms the whole team dynamic. As soon as a person who used to think three steps ahead is no longer afraid of the consequences, they become unpredictable. And in a world like ‘The Boys’, expendable is generally unpredictable.

The fact that he was ready to go through with his drastic schemes, particularly with Butcher, is a major cause of concern. In the absence of that inner restraint, MM is more prone to making risky moves that do not work. And, unlike the supes he is fighting, he does not have powers to fall back on. All decisions have real, irreversible weight.
Meanwhile, other characters like Starlight and Hughie have a reason to cling to, hope, relationships, and a future. MM has consciously dissociated himself with that. And when one of the characters has lost his or her reason to live, the story tends to follow that. And that is what makes this arc so difficult to watch.
It is not growth, it is preparation. The show might be silently preparing something final. Perhaps he still has a chance to turn back. Perhaps that bond with his family will come back when it counts the most. However, at the moment, it is difficult to shake the impression that MM is not merely changing, but preparing to die.
