Before the ‘Outlander‘ series finale aired, Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe spoke to PEOPLE about the bond they built over more than a decade of working together. After 12 years on the Starz drama, the two actors admitted that one of the biggest things they will miss is their shared sense of “humor.”

Heughan said that even when the show took them through difficult scenes and heavy material, Balfe’s humor helped keep the atmosphere lighter. “We had a lot of fun, and there were some tough days and hard subject matter, but there was always a good sense of humor,” he says.

Balfe also agreed that laughter became a major part of their working relationship. She explained that while she and Heughan are different in many ways, they often found the same things funny. “I think we’re very different people, but we have a very similar funny bone,” Balfe, 46, says. “The same things crack us up.

The shared humor clearly became more than just a way to pass the time between takes. It helped them move through long filming days, emotional storylines, and the pressure of leading a beloved series for more than a decade.

For Heughan, the memories he will miss most are not only tied to big scenes or dramatic moments. Instead, he pointed to the simple start-of-day routine he shared with Balfe in the trailer. “What I miss is, in the morning, in the trailer, you rock up, and you’re tired, and we just sit there, and we have a coffee and talk s—,” Heughan admits. “And then run some lines and then probably [talk] more s—.”

That routine became a familiar part of their working life. Before stepping back into Jamie and Claire Fraser’s intense world, the two actors had those quiet, funny, ordinary moments together. “It was lovely, it was a nice way to start your day,” he says of his and Balfe’s morning ritual.

Although they will no longer reunite every year on set, Heughan and Balfe do not seem worried about their friendship fading. Balfe said that, in a “weird” way, the end of the show has actually helped them see each other more. “We’ve actually found a way of seeing more of each other.
