Shailene Woodley gave ‘Paradise‘ fans an emotional performance as Annie Clay in Season 2, but it turns out there was much more happening behind the scenes than viewers ever saw.

The actress recently shared that she created an entire quiet backstory for Annie while filming the show. Many of those moments never made it into the final cut, but they helped to create Annie into one of the season’s most heartbreaking characters.

Shailene Woodley joined ‘Paradise‘ Season 2 with very little preparation time. She had just finished a five-month run on Broadway when creator Dan Fogelman contacted her about the role of Annie Clay. Soon after, she flew to Los Angeles to begin filming.

In a chat with Variety, Fogelman explained Annie’s storyline to her right away. Annie was a former medical student who survived above ground after the disaster. During the season, she falls in love with fellow survivor Link, becomes pregnant, and later dies during childbirth. Woodley admitted the storyline shocked her at first. “I was like, Dan! Oh, my God.”

Even though the role came together quickly, Woodley wanted to fully understand Annie’s emotional state. Since Annie spent years alone in Graceland after the disaster, the actress started imagining what that isolation would actually feel like. During filming breaks, she walked around the Graceland set by herself and quietly built Annie’s inner world.

Woodley even imagined scenes that never appeared in the show. She pictured Annie talking to an Elvis portrait hanging on the wall because she had no one else around for so long. In her mind, Annie slowly started believing Elvis was real. None of those moments made the final version of the series, but Woodley said they helped her understand the character better.

Although viewers never saw those private moments, Woodley explained that they influenced every scene she filmed. She wanted Annie to feel calm and practical instead of emotional and dramatic. “Annie is very practical, very linear, very type-A, versus me, who would have been kooky and overly emotional. Fear wasn’t making her cry,” Woodley shared. “Sitting in those rooms, staring at those walls and asking myself what I would do, that was more so how I crafted her.”

Woodley also said her Broadway experience changed the way she approached acting. Spending months performing live theater taught her to slow down emotionally and stay patient with scenes. “Because of the play, there was this slowness ingrained in me,” she explained. “There was a calmness and steadiness in being all right with taking that time. The directors gave it to me.”

That emotional connection became especially important during Annie’s intense childbirth scene with Sterling K. Brown in Episode 4. Woodley revealed that she became so involved in the moment that she may have bruised Brown’s arm while holding onto him during filming.

I felt like if I were, in that moment, to die, it would be OK, because Sterling had my back,” she told Variety. “It was a raw, honest exchange.” Director Ken Olin reportedly gave the actors freedom to find their emotions naturally during filming. The production also hired real nurses and a doula to help make the scene feel more realistic.

Annie’s story was really about a woman learning to let go of fear and control. After years of trying to survive on her own, Annie finally allowed herself to care deeply about someone else.
