Rivals‘ Season 2 has made several changes to Dame Jilly Cooper’s original book, but one recent change may disappoint many longtime fans.

The latest episode cuts down an important Rupert Campbell-Black and Taggie O’Hara scene and instead puts the spotlight on the growing love triangle involving Bas. While the change adds more drama to the story, it also removes a special moment that helped show just how much Rupert and Taggie cared about each other.

Taggie’s Birthday Story Takes A Different Direction in ‘Rivals’ Season 2

Season 2 has followed Rupert as he tries to rebuild his life after his public scandal. At the same time, he has been trying to stay committed to his relationship with Cameron Cook, even though his feelings for Taggie have never fully gone away. Taggie has also had a difficult time this season.

The latest episode adapts the storyline where Declan and Maud O’Hara forget Taggie’s birthday. This also happens in Jilly Cooper’s book. However, the television series changes what happens next and turns the focus toward the show’s growing love triangle.

In the novel, Rupert visits Taggie on her birthday and brings her a puppy as a gift. It becomes one of the sweetest moments between the two characters. The gift shows how well Rupert knows Taggie and how much he wants to make her happy.

The pair spends time alone together and shares an emotional conversation. During that discussion, they talk about Patrick’s feelings for Cameron. Taggie explains that Patrick is jealous of Rupert and Cameron’s relationship.

The scene becomes even more meaningful when Taggie tells Rupert what Patrick thinks about Cameron moving in with him. She says Patrick believed Cameron’s relationship with Tony was connected to work, but that things were different with Rupert. Taggie tells him, “‘Because one wouldn’t need any incentive… to move in with you.”

That line reveals Taggie’s feelings and creates a memorable moment between them. Unfortunately for book fans, the series removes most of that conversation and shortens the scene considerably.

Bas Becomes The Focus Instead

In the show, Rupert and Taggie’s moment does not last very long. Before they can have a real conversation, Bas arrives. The episode reveals that he had already come to spend time with Taggie after learning it was her birthday.

The change clearly puts more attention on the relationship between Taggie and Bas. The television adaptation has expanded its storyline far more than the original book ever did. The writers seem eager to make the love triangle a major part of Season 2.

While that may create more drama, it also takes away an important Rupert and Taggie moment. The birthday scene could have shown that both characters still have strong feelings for each other despite everything that has happened. Instead, viewers only get a brief interaction before Bas steps in.

As a result, one of the book’s most loved Rupert and Taggie scenes loses much of its emotional impact. The new focus on the love triangle may keep viewers interested, but many readers of Jilly Cooper’s novel will likely feel disappointed that such a meaningful moment was cut short.
