When love was in need of love, it arrived, stayed, and thrived! ‘Schitt’s Creek’ tore the envelope when it came to the representation of the complexity of human beings in the most affable manner. The love on the show was infinite, whether it was romantic, parental, or platonic. It was in abundance but never fell short while giving, and the love story between David and Patrick was the epitome of endless love.
It is less when we reiterate it more that ‘Schitt’s Creek’ portrayed gay romance in not just a positive light but became a beacon for future story-telling. The couple’s language of love was tactile, which was rare in the sitcoms of bygone days like ‘Modern Family.’ Mitch and Cam’s love did not have intimacy, but Patrick and David’s intimate moments became an integral part of a larger queer narrative. Another important part of their love story was music. Patrick’s serenading vocals sang renditions of the best of Mariah Carey and Tina Turner. But Tina’s ‘Simply the Best’ became the love anthem for all queer couples, rejuvenating pop’s most celebrated era!

Tina Turner’s ‘Simply The Best’ Etched David And Patrick’s Most Romantic Moment In Our Hearts
Romance may fizzle out, but the efforts one makes to keep the love alive can sail through the darkest and stormiest of all weather! ‘ Schitt’s Creek’ shielded us from the storm that life became during the pandemic and kept that love and hope alive for everyone in the world. But David and Patrick’s love kept the hope for love alive in us! The gays take their Mariahs, Tinas, and Chers very seriously, and nothing was different for the couple.
The first instance of Patrick’s romantic gesture was during the ‘Open Mic’ episode. Patrick decides to hold an open mic night to bring people to the ‘Rose Apothecary.’ But the cherry on top is that Patrick decides to perform during the night, making David protest against the idea. Mr. Brewer, nevertheless, decides to strum the chords, but David has no clue what is in store for him! When the night dawns, Patrick comes out with his guitar and dedicates a rendition of Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the Best’ to “someone special.” And that someone special gets serenaded by the music, making him fall for him and reigniting that hope for love in him!
When the relationship hits a bump, Tina Turner arrives to rescue her from the abyss. During the ‘Barbecue’ episode, David comes to know that Patrick had a fiancé that he did not tell him about. This devastates David, and he goes into a dark hole. But Patrick, like a true partner, extends olive branches to win his love back! When David does come to terms with everything, he decides to go back to him.
However, Patrick feels that he invaded his space, and David confesses that he wanted to come back, but he loved the gesture of the extended olive branches. It agitates Patrick, leading to a short-lived break. However, death can only tear the two apart, or they may fall out of love with Mariah. So, David decides to serenade Patrick by performing the Tina Turner number for him, proving that love needs the Tina Turner balm to heal the wounds of the past.

Why Did Dan Levy Choose The Song For The Couple?
David Rose’ obsession with Mariah Carey throughout ‘Schitt’s Creek’ is evident. He goes weak on his knees when Patrick confesses his love to him, and he tells him, “You are my Mariah!.” The co-creator of the show, Dan Levy, answered the question about choosing ‘Simply The Best’ during the GQ interview.
Dan Levy said, “I’ve always thought it was one of the most beautifully written pop songs in history. But not many others have noticed how personal and emotional the song is.”
Dan added, “Because of the tempo of it, and because it plays as sort of a fast-paced song, a lot of people skip over just how profound those lyrics are. I, on the other hand, would listen to it and get completely emo on long walks.”
The actor continued, “We wanted it to be a song that was unexpected, that felt like it could be a fun spin on something that people would sing at an open-mic night.”
