One of the most overlooked points from ‘The Boys’ comic is Homelander’s real origin story. He actually has two separate backstories: one is crafted by Vought-American to trick the public, and the other reveals the brutal and horrible truth behind his birth.
This is the story of his secret mother, about whom Homelander himself doesn’t know. This storyline also makes ‘The Boys‘ one of the greatest critiques of power abuse in recent pop culture.
How Homelander Was Actually Born

The story that the public knows is that Homelander crash-landed from an alien planet. But this is a meticulously crafted story by Vought American, who wanted to trick the public into buying the superhero narrative, and is clearly inspired by Superman’s story.
However, this is far from the actual truth. In ‘The Boys #19’, the Legend reveals the truth about his origin. He explains that Homelander was actually grown in a secret laboratory.
Vought-American used the Nazi supe Stormfront’s DNA, who was injected with Compound V when she was still a member of the Hitler Youth.

The goal was to mechanically create the most powerful hero in existence. He was implanted into a disabled woman, who was an easy choice to manipulate due to her lack of a legal guardian. Homelander’s powers were activated during labor, and it resulted in his mother’s death.
Homelander was contained, experimented on, and monitored in a lab for the first 18 years of life, which were marked by unimaginable violence. Moreover, he wasn’t the only victim. The rest of the Seven were produced via this same process.
Homelander’s Birth Shapes His Sadistic Tendencies

Vought-American carefully buried this actual story, never letting Homelander know about his actual mother and depriving him of any human connection. Moreover, the woman was chosen specifically because of her vulnerability so that this horrific story could be buried easily.

The fact that Vought-American kept using this process to create the rest of the Seven reveals the lack of humanity the company is rooted in. Homelander and his mother’s reality was just one occasion where the company abused its power for its psychopathic desires.
This buried story explains Homelander’s psychopathic and sadistic tendencies. Though it doesn’t justify his actions in any way, this story certainly makes this villain more grounded and real.
It also reveals the cruel consequences that innocent people have to face because of unchecked power and greed.
