The end of ‘The Way Home‘ has left many fans wondering why one of Hallmark Channel’s most popular dramas is coming to a close. After four seasons of following the Landry family’s emotional journeys through time, the series aired its final episode on June 21.
While viewers may have hoped for more stories, the decision to end the show appears to have been a creative choice that had been planned long before the final season began.
‘The Way Home’ Was Always Moving Toward A Planned Ending

In November 2025, PEOPLE exclusively revealed that season 4 would be the final chapter of ‘The Way Home‘. At the time, Hallmark Media’s SVP of Programming, Samantha DiPippo, assured fans that the story would reach a meaningful conclusion.

She said, “The Landry family’s journey comes to a satisfying close [and] viewers will get the answers they’ve waited for.” The network also viewed the final season as the completion of a story that had been carefully built over four years. DiPippo praised the audience for following every clue and mystery since the show’s debut.
“Fans of The Way Home have enthusiastically watched and rewatched every episode since the first pond jump of season 1. They’ve tried to piece together the brilliant puzzle Heather Conkie, Alexandra Clarke and Marly Reed expertly crafted,” she said. “We’re grateful to our talented cast led by Andie, Chyler, Evan and Sadie, as well as our amazing writers and crew who have worked so hard on this show.”
The Creators Knew The Final Scene From The Beginning

The show’s ending was not something the writers came up with during the final season. Co-showrunners Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke revealed that they had always known how the story would conclude.

Their goal for season 4 was to give viewers “closure and answers” while staying true to the ending they had imagined from the start. That vision ultimately led Kat and Alice to take one final leap into the pond together.
“We always loved the idea of seeing the two women who started it all hold hands and take a leap together. Only this time we’re just not allowed to go with them,” Conkie told PEOPLE in June 2026. “That was what we always wanted for the end. That they’re going to keep going and having adventures and meeting new people and reuniting with the ones they’ve already met and have come to love. We just don’t get to go with them now.”
For Clarke, ending the series was emotional because the project had been part of her life for years. “It’s been the best four years, well, six years really. From the start of all this that we’ve shared together and with [producer] Marly Reed. And it will be very hard to let it go completely. I don’t think we ever will.”
One reason the ending surprised some fans is that ‘The Way Home‘ still had plenty of stories left to explore. As a series built around time travel, it could have continued visiting different eras and introducing new mysteries. For now, however, the creators believe ‘The Way Home‘ has reached the ending they always intended, bringing the Landry family’s journey to a close after four seasons.
