While ‘House of the Dragon‘s dragons may rule the skies, season 3 is getting ready to terrorize the battlefield differently. After all, longtime fans of George R. R. Martin’s lore know why that’s important, as Lord Roderick Dustin (aka Roddy the Ruin) makes his live-action debut.

Whereas the nobles are all about power and the Iron Throne, Roddy’s tale is much more significant than that. It’s a story about duty, sacrifice, and a warrior’s willingness to die. That emotional weight might make him one of the most memorable additions to the show.

During the Dance of the Dragons, Roddy the Ruin is the Lord of Barrowton and the head of House Dustin. He is a staunch ally of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, and he leads the Winter Wolves, of two thousand older Northern men who expect never to see home again.

The reason they are leaving is heart-wrenching. As winter is making its way into the north, these old men decide to fight rather than be a burden on their starving families. They go to war not for glory, but perhaps for the benefit of the survivors.

It is this sense of tragedy that gives the Winter Wolves a sinister reputation in Fire & Blood. Upon his arrival, it is said that Roddy states his men came down from the north “to die for the queen,” further solidifying his reputation as one of the most valiant warriors in Westeros.

Roddy is said to be old and gray-haired by George R. R. Martin, but he’s not fragile. In battle, he is a nightmare to Rhaenyra’s enemies. He fights a vicious battle at the Battle by the Lakeshore and helps the Lannister army win, but many of his own troops die with him.

His legend expands even more during the infamous Butcher’s Ball, where his last charge is instrumental in downing Ser Criston Cole. Roddy is later to continue fighting at Tumbleton, despite being in horrific condition.

In season 3, Scottish actor Tommy Flanagan will play the Northern warrior, who recently described himself as a man with only destruction, loyalty, and a desire for a glorious death in his heart.

“He’s this old, ferocious warrior. They couldn’t kill him in battle, and all he wants to do is die this glorious death. It’s just this whole one note: My mission is just to kill, destroy, save the queen, save the kingdoms.” If the HBO adaptation is half as intense, then viewers are in for one of the most deadly men in the franchise.
