Why Did ‘Killing Eve’ End After Season 4? Was It Canceled?

After being attached to us since 2018, ‘Killing Eve‘ comes to an end with season four. Killing Eve is a British show featuring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer chasing each other like cat and mouse around the world. It is one of very few series, that is written by a different female head writer in each season. Killing Eve is based on the thriller novel Codename Villanelle, written by Luke Jennings.

Killing Eve‘ follows an intense relationship between MI5 agent Eve Polastri and a Russian psychopath Villanelle chasing around the world. The show was a phenomenon during season one and received positive reviews from critics and fans, while the show remains a hit for AMC Networks and BBC America, the response for the rest of the seasons kept dropping. But season four, marked the end of the love affair between Eve and Villanelle.

    ‘Killing Eve’ Synopsis

As the title suggests, is the show actually about killing Eve? Eve, a bored, whip-smart security services operative who is a desk-bound job which doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. On the other hand, Villanelle is a talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. These two fierce women are equally obsessed with each other. They will lock horns in an epic game of cat and mouse, toppling the typical spy-action thriller.

Each season of ‘Killing Eve‘ is written by a different female writer, the first season is written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The second season is written by Emerald Fennell and the third by Suzanne Heathcote. Sadly, this epic spy thriller came to an end with season four only. In the majority of Season 4 features the two leads seem to fall apart. Villanelle, desperate for change, is now devoting herself to serving God.

While Eve is still obsessed with taking down The Twelve, though she claims that she is no longer interested in Villanelle. She even ignores the invitation to her baptism and even had her arrested, but eventually realized her love for Villanelle couldn’t get any stronger and can never be forgotten.

    Was ‘Killing Eve’ Cancelled?

It was exciting, to watch Sandra Oh in a spy action instead of running around the hospital with scrubs on. ‘Killing Eve‘ cancelation was made public in March 2021 just two months after season four was officially announced. The show is said to end for creative reasons in order to give the show and its characters proper development and a strong conclusion. It was even due to an increasingly difficult and challenging relationship of s Villanelle and Eve. The pressure on the will-they-or-won’t-they relationship over multiple seasons was getting exhausting. As an executive producer, Sandra Oh has also indicated she was ready to bid farewell to Eve and the series.

However, there is some hope still for the fans. AMC Networks announced that the ‘Killing Eve‘ universe could potentially continue with spinoffs. On April 6, 2022, a spinoff about Carolyn Martens was announced to be in the early stages of development. The Carolyn spinoff is most probably a prequel series about the MI6 spymaster, played by Imogen Daines in ‘Killing Eve‘ season four flashback set in 1979.
