Megumi had been imprisoned within his own mind by Sukuna’s overwhelming power. All hope seemed lost in saving him as the curse monarch toyed with his shattered will. However, protagonist Yuji Itadori refused to give up on his friend, no matter the odds against them. Through Yuji’s Domain Expansion and successive hits on Sukuna using his maximum technique, the barriers between him and Sukuna started to weaken.

Nobara during the battle uses her Resonance technique to boost Yuji’s cursed energy before he lands a punishing blow with his Maximum Malevolent Shrine. This deadly team-up causes Sukuna’s Domain to shatter. With Sukuna severely weakened, the mental bind that kept him imprisoned finally broke apart. Sukuna’s grasp on Megumi’s body and soul is torn away, allowing him to regain control at long last.

While physically freed, Megumi was still traumatized from his mental imprisonment. Sukuna had brutally crushed his will to live through psychological torture and forced him to witness the deaths of loved ones. Even upon his release, he was too broken to accept help at first. But Yuji’s unwavering belief in Megumi and refusal to give up on their friendship slowly reignited his inner strength.
