Portgas D. Ace is one of the most favorite characters in the series ‘One Piece’. Since his debut at the Drum Island Arc, the character was further detailed in Alabasta. He became one of the strongest allies of the Straw Hats crew, though for a short time. After eating the devil’s fruit, he became a firepower user, who was feared even by the Government.
The World Government already had its eyes set on Ace and had offered him the position as one of the Warlords of the Sea, but as expected he rejected their offer. Ace had set off on the sea, three years prior to Luffy, and in that time he became one of the most powerful people working under the Whitebeard Pirates. He even called Whitebeard his dad, and his feelings were reciprocated the same.

The Shocking Back Story Of Ace’s Birth
Portgas D. Ace is not only an important character in the series just because of his popularity or connections to Whitebeard, but also because of his lineage. He is the biological son of the Pirate King Gold D. Roger and the mother Portgas D. Rouge. After Roger was executed, the World Government turned the islands upside down to find traces of his family
Though the government had an idea of where his wife could be, no one actually knew who it was. They wanted to make sure that if Roger had any children, they execute them to end the ‘corrupted’ D. bloodline. Before Roger’s execution, he asked Garp to take care of his wife and child who was yet to be born. He even said that if the child was a girl she would be named Ann and in the case of a boy Ace.

Following his will, Rouge named their child Gold D. Ace, but Ace’s hatred towards his father made him take after his mother’s surname. Ace said that it was his way to repay her for risking her life to give birth. Miraculously enough, Rouge successfully evaded the government’s eyes for 20 months and was held in Ace in her womb. Soon after giving birth to Ace, Rouge died. Through her sheer willpower, she saved the child she and Roger loved.

How Did He Become Entangled With Luffy?
Monkey D. Garp took in Ace and left him with Dadan, a forest bandit who became the foster mother of both Luffy and Ace. Garp was mostly away for marine duties and had no time to take care of Luffy. To leave him with someone to take care of, he trusted Dadan. Luffy and Ace both lived together with her and quickly became attached.
Though some rough patches were needed before Ace opened up to Luffy. While staying with Dadan, they got acquainted with Sabo. The three kids shared cups of sake and became blood brothers. From that moment forward these three were inseparable. Luffy being the youngest of the trio was taken care of by his big brothers Ace and Sabo.
