Sharing a cup of sake means forming a bond of friendship and brotherhood. Luffy along with Ace, and Sabo shared a cup of Kyoudai-Sakazuki. At a very tender age, they vowed to become brothers for life and they kept their promise all the way down the future.

Ace somewhere heard that sharing a cup of sake meant brotherhood bonds. He went on to steal a bottle of sake from their foster mother Dadan and shared them in the forest with Luffy and Sabo. This trio of youngsters later went on their own way to achieve their own respective goals. Luffy, Ace, and Sabo all wanted to be pirates. They dreamed of creating their own pirate crew one day and setting out on the ocean to find freedom. Having One Piece was only a means to serve their goal. As Luffy stated at Sabaody Archipelago, he wanted to be the freest person in the sea.

To do that achieving One Piece and claiming the title of the Pirate King was only a means to his dream. Unfortunately, fate can be a cruel thing. Luffy and Ace mourned the death of Sabo who assumedly died in the sea at a very young age.

Sabo’s death broke the two, especially Luffy as he was the youngest of the siblings. Seeing Luffy crying like crazy, Ace promised that he’ll never die, because if he dies who’ll look after their snotty little brother? Heartbreakingly enough, Ace died in front of Luffy in Marineford Arc, where the World Government passed on a decree to execute Ace.

Luffy not only had to face Sabo’s death but had to see Ace die in front of him. What broke him the most was that Ace could’ve escaped saving his life, but he sacrificed himself to protect Luffy, his younger brother. It was heartbreaking to see the cruelty of fate and to see Luffy, the carefree jolly person breaking down after that.
