From what we know, Luffy has the Gomu Gomu Fruit, but in reality, it’s the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika. It roughly translates to “human-human fruit,” but it also turns him into Nika in the Wano Arc. He undergoes different transformations, but it is Gear 5 that makes him synonymous with Joyboy.
Gear 5 defies physics, and while it is all caricaturish with its cartoonish flair, it gives Luffy unparalleled power. He becomes Joyboy as he truly carries the will to liberate enslaved and oppressed people. It is almost whimsical the way he is portrayed; where one would expect a hero to be stoic, Luffy personifies the true liberation that comes from joy.
Even Emet called Luffy Joyboy before he sacrificed himself, which further strengthens the Straw Hats’ relation to the ancient figure.
