Joyboy is probably one of the most mysterious characters in Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus, ‘One Piece.’ His origins date back to the Void Century, where he fought Imu and the 20 Kings alongside his allies. Although cryptic and enigmatic, he is one of the most pivotal figures in One Piece’s lore. He symbolizes true freedom, and while Luffy is known to carry the same spirit, it all ties in well with Joyboy’s mission and Gear 5 transformation.

It is, however, important to understand Joyboy’s role and history as one of the central figures in the series. His actions and goals were essential in shaping the events in the Void Century. It also entailed an era of driven pirates that set out on a quest for the fabled treasure. However, there were very few who truly understood his legacy and inheritance, and Luffy is one of them. So how does it all tie together? Well, let’s unpack this!

For the uninitiated, Joyboy’s lore is based on a real-life Caribbean folk figure who goes by the same name. He brought joy to the people and instilled a streak of revolution within the masses using his drums of liberation. Hence, the One Piece anime also gave an ode to this West African legend.

In the manga, Joyboy fought against Imu and other Celestial Dragons who constituted the World Government. He, of course, was defeated by the magnanimous difference in power. However, he still posed a potent threat to the entire institution of the monarchy and WF as a whole.

Although he was incapacitated by the forces, Joyboy left a message for Fish Kingdom indicating his apology in one of the Poneglyphs. He possessed the voice of all things and a formidable Haki, but most importantly, he was the user of the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika.

From what we know, Luffy has the Gomu Gomu Fruit, but in reality, it’s the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika. It roughly translates to “human-human fruit,” but it also turns him into Nika in the Wano Arc. He undergoes different transformations, but it is Gear 5 that makes him synonymous with Joyboy.

Gear 5 defies physics, and while it is all caricaturish with its cartoonish flair, it gives Luffy unparalleled power. He becomes Joyboy as he truly carries the will to liberate enslaved and oppressed people. It is almost whimsical the way he is portrayed; where one would expect a hero to be stoic, Luffy personifies the true liberation that comes from joy.

Even Emet called Luffy Joyboy before he sacrificed himself, which further strengthens the Straw Hats’ relation to the ancient figure. Vegapunk also shed light on how the aftermath of the Void Century war led to massive instability across the world, where continents sank, and eventually sea levels rose.

In conclusion, Luffy simply isn’t the reincarnation of Joyboy; rather, he carries the legacy of unfulfilled promises and the will to unenslave the masses from the clutches of the World Government.
