Anne Rice spent years building the world of ‘The Vampire Chronicles,’ and few characters meant more to her than Lestat de Lioncourt. The charismatic yet dangerous vampire became one of the defining figures of modern horror literature, making Rice especially protective when Hollywood decided to bring ‘Interview With The Vampire’ to the big screen.

That protectiveness led to one of the most public casting disputes of the 1990s. When Warner Bros. announced that Tom Cruise would play Lestat, Rice openly criticized the decision, questioning whether the actor was remotely suited for the role. Yet after seeing the finished film, she changed her mind so dramatically that she publicly apologized and encouraged fans to support the movie.

When production began on ‘Interview With The Vampire,’ Cruise was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Audiences knew him from blockbuster hits such as ‘Top Gun’ and acclaimed dramas like ‘A Few Good Men.’

Rice, however, had a very different vision for Lestat. She imagined the vampire as an imposing European aristocrat and often pointed to actors such as Rutger Hauer and Julian Sands as examples of the type she had in mind.

As a result, she reacted harshly when Cruise landed the role. Rice publicly argued that he was completely wrong for the character and even suggested that the film’s two leads should swap parts, with Brad Pitt playing Lestat instead.

Her criticism quickly spread among the novel’s fans. Before filming had even wrapped, many readers had already decided that the adaptation had miscast one of the book’s most important characters. The backlash became so significant that Rice’s objections were almost as widely discussed as the movie itself.

The VHS Tape That Changed Her Mind

Rice remained skeptical throughout production, but everything changed when producer David Geffen sent her a VHS copy of the film before its release.

Watching the movie forced her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about Cruise’s performance. The actor’s transformation immediately surprised her. The makeup, costumes, and cinematography stripped away the modern movie-star image that had concerned her from the beginning.

More importantly, Rice felt Cruise understood the character beneath the appearance. He captured Lestat’s arrogance, cruelty, charm, and loneliness in a way she had not expected.

Instead of relying on his familiar screen persona, Cruise embraced the novel’s theatrical qualities that defined the vampire. His performance balanced menace with vulnerability, allowing Rice to see the character she had created.

By the time the film ended, she no longer viewed Cruise as a miscast leading man. She viewed him as Lestat.

The Public Apology That Shocked Fans

Rice did not quietly change her opinion behind the scenes. Instead, she went out of her way to make her reversal public. After watching the film, she personally contacted Cruise and praised his work. She also admitted that she had been wrong about the casting decision from the start.

Then she took an even more dramatic step. Rice purchased two-page advertisements in major publications, including Daily Variety and The New York Times, to publicly praise the film and encourage fans to see it.

In her statement, she acknowledged that Cruise had completely won her over. “From the moment he appeared, Tom was Lestat for me,” she wrote.

The highly public endorsement helped change the conversation surrounding the movie. What began as a controversial casting choice eventually became one of the most celebrated performances in Cruise’s career. At the same time, ‘Interview With The Vampire’ became a major commercial success.

Rice’s willingness to publicly admit she had misjudged the actor remains one of Hollywood’s most famous reversals. Few authors have criticized a casting decision so loudly, and even fewer have gone to such lengths to admit they were wrong.
