A surprising detail from Aubrey Plaza’s past has grabbed attention, especially because it involves Michael Cera. During an interview, she recently revealed that the two almost got married during one unforgettable trip to Vegas.
The story has left fans curious and eager to learn how things got to that point and why the plan ultimately failed.
Aubrey Plaza Shares The Build-Up To Her ‘Almost’ Wedding With Michael Cera

Plaza shared this story during her appearance on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. During the chat, Bateman mentioned that he had read online that Plaza once dated Cera. She confirmed it playfully and said she had “booked and bagged” him.
She then spoke about a road trip they took while they were dating. The two had been eating “a bag of edibles” and decided to drive across the country together. At some point, they came up with a strange but funny plan to head to Las Vegas and get married.
Plaza explained how serious they were about the idea and said, “We almost got married.” She also shared that they planned to get divorced right away so they could always joke about being each other’s ex-husband and ex-wife. They even reached the county office in Las Vegas and stood in line, ready to proceed.
Why They Did Not Go Through With The Wedding

Things changed very quickly before anything official could happen. Plaza admitted that both of them were “too high and paranoid,” which made the situation feel uncomfortable.

She recalled standing in line when everything suddenly felt chaotic. People around them started running, and Plaza said, “We ran. We bailed.” That moment ended their plan just as quickly as it had started.
Plaza and Cera met while working on ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World‘ and started dating soon after. At that time, Plaza was just beginning to gain attention through ‘Parks and Recreation‘, while Cera was already well-known because of films like ‘Superbad‘ and ‘Juno’.
She suggested that both the drugs and his fame played a role in why they did not go through with it. The relationship lasted for about 18 months before they eventually broke up. Life moved on for both of them, and they found new paths.
Cera later married Nadine, and they now have two children. Plaza married filmmaker Jeff Baena, who directed The Little Hours. Sadly, Baena died by suicide in January 2025, just months after their separation.
