Christian Bale‘s performance as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho(2000) transformed him into one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. Two decades later, it’s difficult to imagine anyone else playing the wealthy investment banker whose polished exterior hides a deeply disturbed and insecure mind. Yet landing the role didn’t bring Bale the financial reward many fans assumed.

By the time cameras started rolling, Bale had already spent months fighting to keep the part. Even after director Mary Harron finally got the actor she wanted, the studio made sure theBatman Beginsactor understood they had never been enthusiastic about the decision. It all became painfully clear the moment he collected his paycheck.

Mary Harron wanted Bale to play Patrick Bateman from the beginning, but the studio had other plans. Executives pushed hard to cast Leonardo DiCaprio following the enormous success of Titanicand even offered him a reported $20 million to star in the film.

During that period, Bale refused to move on. “I was prepping for it when other people were playing the part,” Bale later told GQ. “I was still prepping for it. And, you know, it moved on. I lost my mind. But I won it back.”

When DiCaprio eventually left the project, Harron turned to Bale again. The studio agreed, but only under one condition. The actor recalled producers paying him “the absolute minimum they were legally allowed to pay.”

Reports have long estimated that figure to be around $50,000, a tiny fraction of what DiCaprio had reportedly been offered. The salary became an awkward subject on set. Bale remembered sitting in the makeup trailer while crew members joked about how little he earned.

“The makeup artists were laughing at me because I was getting paid less than any of them,” he revealed. The comments stung, but they also reminded him how uncertain his situation had become.

Money mattered for reasons that reached far beyond professional pride. Bale revealed that while he waited for the project to sort out its casting, he turned down other opportunities and watched his financial situation deteriorate.

“I had a house that I was sharing with my dad and my sister, and that was getting repossessed,” Bale explained. Instead of worrying about Hollywood status, he focused on something far more immediate. “My motivation after that was just, ‘I’ve got to get enough that the house doesn’t get repossessed.'”

In hindsight, Bale acknowledged that many actors from his generation benefited from DiCaprio passing on projects. “To this day, any role that anybody gets, it’s only because [Leonardo] passed on it beforehand,” he joked. “Thank you, Leo, because literally, he gets to choose everything he does.”

Bale added that he remained grateful for every opportunity that came his way and had no desire for the level of fame DiCaprio attained. Although ‘American Psycho’ didn’t make Bale rich overnight, it gave him something far more valuable.

His fearless performance established him as one of Hollywood’s most committed actors and opened the door to bigger opportunities, including ‘Batman Begins’ just five years later. The paycheck barely reflected his talent, but the role ultimately changed the course of his career.
