In 2011, the legendary filmmaker David Lynch decided to break marketing rules by launching an unconventional promotional campaign for his private coffee blend. Instead of creating a standard commercial for David Lynch Signature Cup Organic Coffee, the director returned to his surrealist roots and staged a conversation with one of popular culture’s most recognizable and loved icons: Barbie.

This idea seemed innocent at first, but the collaboration of Lynch’s artistic skills and one of the most famous doll franchises resulted in an advertising clip that looked disturbing and unusual. Consequently, this unique campaign attracted the attention of a large corporation, which intervened and prevented the video from gaining further popularity.

David Lynch conceived this unusual promotional project in 2011. To advertise his own coffee blend, the director shot an unusual video featuring a casual conversation between him and a Barbie doll, with him voicing both ends.

In the clip, the doll questions David about his cup of coffee, asking whether it is his favorite. He answers by discussing the varieties in his coffee blends and tells her about espresso, house roast, and even decaffeinated coffee.

Despite its promotional purpose, Lynch filled the video with the surrealism and eccentricity that had long defined his work. For instance, he compliments his new friend on her appearance and offers her a cup of his coffee, which makes this advertisement read almost like a miniature film.

Although the project perfectly reflected Lynch’s signature style, it used one of the world’s most famous icons to promote a commercial product. But little did he know that this fun appearance would lead to some unpleasant consequences.

The Barbie-Inspired Promotion Prompted A Takedown Request

According to reports, Lynch ran into unexpected trouble because his promotional project featured Mattel’s iconic Barbie doll. The company objected to the director’s use of its products to promote his personal brand.

Although the case did not lead to a scandal or lawsuit, Mattel reportedly politely asked Lynch to take down the video. The request proved effective, as the filmmaker deleted his clip from the website. And just like that, the project effectively ceased to exist.

The aftermath saw a few copies surface across various platforms, including YouTube, but that’s about it. While the unconventional marketing experiment didn’t survive, it eventually spawned an unexpected legacy.

Years after its removal, the bizarre short continues to fascinate David Lynch fans, serving as a reminder of the filmmaker’s ability to turn even a simple commercial into something unforgettable.
