While attending the Sundance Film Festival, O’Brien and co-star River Gallo shed light on how the distinctive look for ‘Ponyboi’ came to be. The actor revealed to THR that the character’s hair and wardrobe were the result of a collaboration between himself, Gallo, and director Esteban Arango. While Dylan leaned towards a cropped hairstyle, Gallo envisioned a Jersey Shore-inspired look for the film’s setting.
“We had this barber do this really cool cut on me that just sort of combined all,” explained O’Brien. Recounting a pivotal moment, ‘All Too Well’ star shared in a candid conversation, “Remember that day in the trailer? We were doing like the goatee and you were like, ‘Leave the chin strap.’ I was like, ‘Sure.’ And then you fought for the chinstrap and kept it, thankfully, because I love it.”

Gallo’s ideas, including a tattoo concept, played a crucial role in shaping O’Brien’s appearance. The ‘Teen Wolf‘ alum noted, “River literally texted me about a tattoo idea that early on when I first came on board and I was like, ‘I love it,’ and I’ll leave it as a surprise.”
With the unique look finalized, O’Brien found a deeper connection to his character. “It just kind of came together and really informed me. I mean, those things just helped so much, especially with something that was a departure for me… I definitely felt like I knew this guy,” he expressed.
The actor emphasized that the collaborative process, from tattoos to clothing.
“I could never have stepped into the role in the way that I ended up doing without all those pieces in the process.”
