Lil Nas X’s ‘Long Live Montero’ Documentary Premiere Halted Due To Bomb Threat At Toronto International Film Festival

Lil Nas X emerged as one of the essential LGBTQIA+ icons in the music industry. He came to the music scene with his debut single, ‘Old Town Road’ with Miley Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus. The song became a huge sensation due to its cross-pollination of country and hip-hop genres, making him an overnight star. But the rapper did not fizzle out as a one-hit star. He came out with his first LP, ‘Montero’ with features like Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, etc.

With the success of ‘Montero,’ Lil Nas X proved his mettle as a rapper. He appeared on many television shows and at award ceremonies to give some iconic performances. In 2022, the ‘Industry Baby’ artist started the ‘Long Live Montero’ tour, which ended in March 2023. He also announced that the concert documentary for the tour will premiere in 2023. Now that the film’s premiere took place at the Toronto International Film Festival, it was marred by a bomb threat.

It was the celebration of one of the most influential queer black artists in contemporary times during the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023! Lil Nas X, along with directors Zac Manuel and Carlos López Estrada, graced the TIFF for the premiere of the ‘Long Live Montero’ tour documentary. The directors followed the artist for 60 days on his tour to learn more about his career, life, and zeal to make his place in the pop and rap industries.

However, the ‘Long Live Montero’ documentary’s premiere was delayed after a bomb threat. The Toronto police came near Roy Thomson Hall, where the documentary was set to premiere. They received the call after Lil Nas X was to grace the red carpet at 10 p.m. The police swept King Street to ensure the safety and protection of the festival attendees, the artist, and his team. After the security protocol, the premiere resumed in a delayed manner.

A spokesperson at the Toronto International Film Festival gave a statement, saying, “Earlier this evening, we were made aware by the Toronto Police Service of an investigation in the vicinity of the red carpet for the Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero screening.”

The statement continued, “Our standard security measures remained in place during this time and the screening commenced with a slight delay. To our knowledge, this was a general threat and not directed at the film or the artist.”

Lil Nas X, Zac Manuel, and Carlos López Estrada talked to Variety about the journey of filming the documentary and capturing the artist using his freedom to express himself. Zac called Nas “intelligent” and “thoughtful” for sharing his journey with his identity and family, which became the heart of the film. The Grammy-winning artist also praised the director duo, saying that the two had “a cool vibe.”

Lil Nas X said, “It was like, ‘Let’s see what happens, where it goes.’ We got so much content and so many different moments. I was interested to see how they were gonna cut it down, but it came out like really beautiful. And it really shows a moment of uncertainty in my life that I was glad was documented.”

He continued, “I feel like stepping into anything new is always gonna be uncomfortable, so it was definitely scary, and there were also a lot of insecurities, and fighting against those, as far as how I feel about performing well and how I felt at that time. But I got through it and now I actually love performing.”
