The Met Gala might look effortless from the outside, but celebs actually spend the whole night balancing towering heels, heavy gowns, and outfits with zero room for error. And if things go south, it instantly becomes a moment everyone remembers, even if the cameras miss it. Elle Fanning learned that the hard way.
While looking back on one of her Met Gala appearances, the actress admitted she suffered an unforgettable fall right in front of several fellow celebrities. Although the incident left her embarrassed at the time, she now laughs about the split-second mistake that unfolded in the middle of fashion’s biggest night.
Elle Fanning’s Outfit Betrayed Her At The Worst Possible Time

Appearing on the comedy podcast Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster in November 2025, Fanning recalled that she had been sitting quietly at the event while other guests chatted nearby. At one point, she decided to stand up without thinking much about her outfit.

“I kind of got up,” she said, explaining that she had on “giant shoes” and a dress with a long train. Those two elements proved to be the perfect recipe for disaster.
As soon as she stood, she lost her balance. “I completely fell on my a**,” Fanning admitted with a laugh, describing how the glamorous moment quickly turned into one she would rather forget.
The actress said the fall happened so suddenly that there was no chance to recover gracefully. Instead, she found herself sitting on the floor in front of some very familiar faces.
Cardi B’s Reaction Made The Embarrassing Moment Even More Memorable

The timing couldn’t have been worse. Fanning revealed that Billie Eilish and Cardi B were standing nearby, talking to one another, when she crashed to the floor. Rather than ignoring what had happened, Cardi B immediately checked on her.

“Girl, are you okay?” the rapper asked after seeing the unexpected tumble. Fanning quickly reassured her, saying “Yeah, I’m all good… don’t mind me,” before getting herself back up. Looking back, Fanning joked that she missed the perfect opportunity to save herself.
“I should’ve pretended I was doing a Drag Race death drop…but I wasn’t that quick.” Today, the story has become one of Fanning’s favorite and most hilarious behind-the-scenes memories from the Met Gala.
While the event celebrates glamor and flawless fashion, her experience showed that even Hollywood’s biggest stars could occasionally lose their footing, especially when giant shoes and a sweeping train work against them.
