Shakespeare has famously said, “What’s in a name?” But actress Emma Stone seemingly does not agree with him. The two-time Oscar winner has a lot to say about her name preferences. With Emma as her stage name, Stone misses being called by her original name.
During a recent interview, Stone revealed how she would always prefer to be called by her original name Emily instead of Emma. She also disclosed the reason that led her to get a stage name. Here’s what the actress has to say about the relevance of names in her life.

Why Did Emma Stone Change Her Name From Emily?
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter along with ‘The Curse‘ co-star Nathan Fielder, Emma Stone revealed that she would rather have someone call her by her given name, Emily, whenever possible.
When asked if she would correct a fan who called her by her real name instead of Emma, the 35-year-old actress said, “No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.” Stone further went on to clarify that “people that I work with” call her Emily, especially “when I get to know them.”
She explained that she adopted the stage name “Emma Stone” because “Emily Stone was taken” by another actress who was a member of SAG-AFTRA before her. However, a couple of years ago, Stone had a change of heart.
“Then I freaked out a couple of years ago,” she said. “For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily,'” she said. She also mentioned that her co-star Fielder even calls her Em, which she finds easier.

Emma Stone Says It Was Her Childhood Wish To Be Called Emma Because Of Her Love For Spice Girls
This is not the first time that Emma Stone has opened up about her name preference. Back in November 2018, she had revealed that she wanted to be called Emma because of her favorite Spice Girl, Baby Spice (Emma Bunton), when she was younger.
“Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice, and guess what? Now I am,” she said during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Further reminiscing about her childhood wishes, Stone said, “It wasn’t necessarily because of her, but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes, I did.” She also said at the time that she was still pretty excited to attend the upcoming Spice Girls’ 2019 stadium tour.
Putting more of her love for Spice Girls on display, the ‘Poor Things‘ actress also took an online quiz to find out which Spice Girl she was most like. She was shocked when she was matched with Posh Spice. “I’m Posh Spice?” she said. “That is not — I’m shocked. I’m shocked.”
