Lance Barber Knew His Character On ‘Young Sheldon’ Has An “Expiry Date”
Executive producer Steve Holland opened up about the decision to bring an end to George’s life in this manner on the show. He explained that most viewers might already have an idea about his death, but they wouldn’t know when exactly to expect it. The sudden heart attack as the cause of his death was aimed to catch viewers off guard with the unexpected timing.
“We wanted to do it in a way that was hopefully a little surprising,” Holland said during an interview with Variety. “So that’s why it happens at the end of [episode 12] — we thought maybe we can catch people off guard. Even though they know it’s going to come, maybe they won’t see it coming then,” he added.
Holland also said that Barber was well aware of his character’s death on the show as he was informed about it since the beginning of ‘Young Sheldon‘. “He’s known since the beginning of the show that George Sr. had an expiration date,” he said. “We slowed time down a little bit… We stretched one year out into a couple seasons to keep Lance alive as far as long as we could. But he always knew this was coming,” the director added.
The last episode of the season finale airs on May 16, and will also feature Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik who played the characters of grown-up Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farah Fowler in ‘The Big Ban Theory‘.
