Following persistent chatter labeling him a doppelgänger of a famous actor, Jesse Plemons stepped forward to address it in the most hilarious way possible. Yep, the star of ‘Kinds of Kindness’ responded to one of the internet’s favorite celebrity comparisons that ties him to the legendary Matt Damon.
From awkward red-carpet encounters to goofy fan interactions, Plemons had heard these comparisons for years. So, how did he deal with it? The actor took a comedic approach to grapple with the ever-controversial doppelgänger claims. And what began as years of Hollywood confusion ultimately became comedy gold for him.
Jesse Plemons On Being Compared To Matt Damon For Years

While promoting ‘Kinds of Kindness’ alongside Emma Stone on Today in 2024, Jesse Plemons revealed that people still mistake him for Matt Damon regularly. The television host Craig Melvin shared a particular incident in which his wife spent much of the movie convinced she was watching Damon.

Responding to the mix-up, Plemons joked, “Still not Matt Damon.” The actor admitted that the confusion has been a recurring theme throughout his career. “Yeah, for a little while now, which there are worse things to be called, for sure.” For him, the comparison is flattering.
However, he has also picked up several Damon-related nicknames over the years. “It’s definitely flattering, but, yeah, throughout the course of my career I’ve had various Matt Damon-associated nicknames and such.” People have turned the Matt Damon comparison into one of those odd quirks that now follow Plemons in his next Hollywood chapters.
Despite building a storied career with roles in major shows such as ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Friday Night Lights,’ and ‘The Power of the Dog,’ he still hears claims of resemblance during fan interactions and interviews long after it became a joke. But rather than push back against it, Plemons has turned the joke right back on them.
Plemons Turned Mistaken Identity Into Comedy

Instead of brushing off the resemblance, Plemons later embraced the joke during an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ in June 2024. As part of the comedy sketch, Kimmel’s sidekick, Guillermo, locked Jesse in a cage because he mistook him for the ‘Oppenheimer’ actor.

It was already funny as the talk show is famous for frequently featuring a mock feud between host Jimmy Kimmel and Damon. Even though Plemons repeatedly insists that he is not Damon, Guillermo found it hard to believe him. “I told you, I’m not Matt Damon,” Plemons told him.
But Guillermo was only willing to let Plemons go if he could prove that he did not have the genius-level math skills of Damon’s character from ‘Good Will Hunting.’ And when Plemons failed a basic multiplication question, Guillermo ultimately released him, realizing he had mistaken him for the wrong actor.
Walking down the hallway toward the stage, the actor looked back at the camera and delivered an iconic quote from the Robin Williams-starring movie, “How do you like them apples?” The epic moment nicely illustrated Plemons’ willingness to laugh at the situation rather than resist it.
Accepting the joke, Jesse Plemons turned a years-long case of mistaken identity into an iconic piece of comedy. The actor proved he can enjoy the comparison as much as the fans.
