Known for demanding total commitment from his actors, Christopher Nolan made Matt Damon undergo a dramatic physical transformation for the upcoming project, The Odyssey.’ The actor revealed that he dropped to 167 pounds while preparing to play the legendary Greek king Odysseus in Nolan’s upcoming epic.

The transformation pushed Damon to a weight he had not seen since his teenage years. Speaking on a podcast earlier this year, the actor explained that Nolan wanted a specific look for the ancient hero, one that prioritized athleticism and endurance over sheer size.

Why Nolan Wanted Damon “Lean But Strong”

Unlike many modern blockbuster roles that require actors to add significant muscle mass, Nolan envisioned a different physique for Odysseus. Damon said the director wanted a warrior capable of surviving years of hardship and travel rather than someone built like a contemporary superhero.

“Nolan wanted me lean but strong,” Damon said on the ‘New Heights’ podcast. “I used to walk around at between 185 and 200, and I did that whole movie at 167. And I haven’t been that light since high school.” The weight loss began with a strict 90-day health program recommended by his doctor.

During that period, Damon eliminated gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar from his diet. He admitted the process was difficult, especially at the beginning, but it ultimately changed his eating habits in the long term. The actor also credited his wife for helping him stay committed throughout the cleanse.

By the end of the program, the ‘Oppenheimer’ actor discovered he had a gluten intolerance and decided to remain gluten-free during the film’s lengthy production schedule. Combined with extensive physical training, the diet helped him achieve the lean, athletic frame Nolan envisioned for the character.

A Production Unlike Anything Damon Has Experienced

Damon’s physical preparation mirrors the scale of the production itself. Nolan reportedly filmed ‘The Odyssey’ entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras while shooting across multiple countries, including Greece and Morocco. The director also continued his preference for practical filmmaking.

Rather than relying heavily on digital environments, the production used full-scale Greek ships, real locations, and a massive practical Trojan Horse. Damon recently told ‘GQ’ that working on sets of that size reminded him of an earlier era of filmmaking.

“I knew that this was the last chance I was going to have to do something like this,” Damon said, reflecting on the project’s scale and the industry’s increasing reliance on digital technology. The actor suggested that productions of this magnitude may become increasingly rare.

It is because of their shift toward virtual environments and computer-generated effects. For him, Nolan’s epic saga represents a filmmaking style that is becoming harder to find in modern Hollywood. Meanwhile, Damon leads one of the most impressive casts assembled for a major studio release in recent years.

The film also stars Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Lupita Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Viewers will get to see Damon’s drastic transformation when ‘The Odyssey’ arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026.
