Leaving your phone behind is apparently one of the first rules of stepping onto a Christopher Nolan film set. According to Lupita Nyong’o, that single decision completely changed the atmosphere while filming ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s upcoming mythological epic scheduled for 2026.
Nyong’o recently opened up about the experience of working under Nolan’s famously strict production style, explaining that the lack of phones created a level of focus she had never experienced on another set. Instead of actors and crew members drifting into distractions between takes, everybody stayed locked into the production itself.
The Set Felt “Focused”

Nyong’o described the overall atmosphere on the set with one word: “Focused.” According to the actress, the absence of smartphones immediately changed how everyone interacted during filming.
“There are no phones allowed on a Christopher Nolan set, and you would not believe what a difference it makes,” Nyong’o explained. “Everybody is paying attention. Everybody is on their feet, everybody knows what’s going on because they don’t have any distractions.”
She also described the environment as unusually intense in the best possible way. “It just feels potent. It just feels more powerful than any other set that I’ve been on,” she added.
The comments line up with Nolan’s long-established reputation for maintaining strict on-set discipline. Multiple actors who have worked with the director over the years, including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Anne Hathaway, have previously discussed how controlled and distraction-free his productions tend to be.

Nolan’s Old-School Filmmaking Style

The phone ban is only one part of Nolan’s production philosophy. The director famously avoids many modern filmmaking habits that dominate large Hollywood sets.
Nolan rarely uses video village monitors and instead stays close to the camera itself during shooting. He also reportedly avoids placing chairs around the set because he prefers actors and crew members to stay engaged and active instead of drifting away between takes.
That level of discipline becomes even more important on a production as large as ‘The Odyssey.’ Reports surrounding the film have described it as Nolan’s biggest production to date, carrying an estimated budget of around $250 million.
The film adapts The Odyssey, the ancient Greek epic written by Homer. Nolan reportedly shot the project entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras, continuing the large-format filmmaking approach that defined films like Oppenheimer and Dunkirk.

A Massive Cast and Dual Role for Nyong’o

Nyong’o is handling one of the more demanding performances in the film by playing two major mythological figures connected to the Trojan War storyline.
She stars as Helen of Troy, the legendary woman whose abduction sparks the war itself, while also portraying Helen’s sister, Clytemnestra, the wife of King Agamemnon.
The ensemble around her is stacked with major names. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Tom Holland portrays Telemachus. Anne Hathaway appears as Penelope, Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, Zendaya takes on Athena, and Charlize Theron portrays Calypso.
With production continuing under Nolan’s tightly controlled filmmaking process, ‘The Odyssey’ is currently scheduled to release in theaters on July 17, 2026.
