Behold, ‘Rick and Morty’ fans, the series is back with its ninth installment. There’s so much in store for fans, and it only gets darker with each episode. However, Ian Cardoni spilled the beans on something even more interesting.

Ian Cardoni, who voices Rick Sanchez in Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, recently spoke to ScreenRant in an exclusive interview.

When asked about the character’s arc in the current season, Cardoni addressed it, saying, “We’re all trying to find who we are in this chaos, and Rick’s no different in that way. He has access to different tech and different dimensions to help explore that.

The voice actor also underlined how the series will present the idea of crossroads and the choices we make eventually. It also becomes a relatable and familiar factor that serves as a hook for the audience.

I hope that it can kind of be relatable for us, as fans, in how he explores the human condition, and in all the different versions of himself, and the hijinks that it leads to.

The whole self-discovery and emotional nature of the arc fit well. This is also because of Rick’s past actions in all the seasons up to now. It all ties in well with the themes of the home and self in the show.

The Home And The Self In Rick and Morty

The Home and the self aren’t divorced, but rather they are something that the characters rediscover. We see Rick as a mastermind, a genius, but it all breaks down to him being a flawed character. He is an old man who abandons his family, that trace back to his deep-seated trauma.

He lost all his original family to a murder carried out by his alternate self. It also led to him abandoning his daughter Beth in the early days, which also reflects in her parenthood as well.

As a result, the only link to home Morty has is his grandfather, Rick. There is little to no normalcy that both characters share, but there are glimmers that make this evident.

They bake cookies, they go on adventures, and they even risk their lives. Let’s not forget that Rick almost loses Morty, and these escapades also affect the latter mentally. He is also traumatized, but in the grand scheme of things, Morty loves his grandfather.

Up until now, the show has underlined the shattering myth of Rick being a perfect and genius mad scientist.

He may be cynical and all pragmatic, but his care and concerns for Morty run deep. It is also precisely why he steps in as a father figure for his grandson and substitutes for Jerry.

Season 9 will explore Rick and Morty’s dynamic, but also surface Rick’s insecurities and fears.
