“It Makes Me Sick”: Selena Gomez Reflects On The Negative Self-Talk When She Was At “Rock Bottom”

Selena Gomez is not just known for her singing and acting talent but also for being unapologetically open about her personal and mental health struggles. Though she has always been open about her struggles on social media, the star has also received a lot of backlash for her updates. She is also infamous for getting on and off Instagram frequently.

However, she has been having some good days for a while since she started dating music producer Benny Blanco. As she looks back at the days when she was at rock bottom, Selena says she does not feel so great about being self-deprecative. She recently opened up about her past struggles with self-criticism and mental health during a panel at SXSW.

Reflecting on her 2022 documentary ‘My Mind & Me’ during her appearance at the SXSW event, Selena Gomez said she does not feel comfortable with all that she shared on it. The film captures her battles with body image, bipolar disorder, and lupus over six years. However, the star has a problem with the negative self-talk captured in the early stages of filming.

It makes me sick to hear the things that I was saying about myself in the beginning. It bums me out,” the singer said during the interview. “But I think everybody can relate to that feeling. It’s important to speak to yourself with kindness, but I don’t think I really understood that [at the start of the film],” she added.

The singer revealed that she was motivated to share her mental health struggles candidly after feeling like she didn’t belong in the entertainment industry. “There was a lot of people that cared about me more than I cared about myself that really wanted me to do things I wasn’t ready for. I had my rock bottom, and I had to do it in my time,” Gomez explained.
