In the rollercoaster world of fame, even the heartthrob from Fifty Shades of Grey, Jamie Dornan, sought refuge. After the film faced a critical pummeling, Dornan spilled the beans on his discreet escape in a revealing interview.
Jamie has been in the show biz long enough to know not to take the reviews to the heart. Yet what can an actor do but shield a little when the reviews start raining? That’s what our Christian Grey did.

Jamie Dornan Took The Family On A Rural Retreat
Amid the tidal wave of ridicule following Fifty Shades of Grey’s release in 2015, Jamie Dornan had a trick up his sleeve, a rural hideaway. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson and her actor husband, Aaron, threw Dornan a lifeline, offering their empty house as a retreat to dodge the harsh spotlight.
In a candid interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Dornan spilled the beans on this secret escape. Admitting to hiding away until the storm of criticism passed, he shared, “I was brought to just ridicule, almost.” This escape allowed Dornan, his wife, Amelia Warner, and their baby Dulcie to weather the storm away from prying eyes.
“They let us have their place in the country, and we hid there for a while and just shut ourselves from the world for a bit and then came out the other side,” he revealed.

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Box Office Success
Despite the adapted film’s critical bashing, the box office success, raking in over £1bn, helped soothe the sting. However, Dornan highlighted the stark contrast between the movie’s commercial success and the harsh critical reception.
He said addressing the progressive career since the trilogy, “And even now, when I’ve just had very glowing reviews for recent work, there wouldn’t be many of them that don’t mention Fifty Shades. A lot of reviews are like: ‘He’s great, but lest we forget, here’s when he wasn’t great.’ Give us a chance!”
Dornan admitted the profitability of Fifty Shades didn’t shield him entirely from the relentless association. The Irish actor said, “It was a strange thing because then you are like: ‘Well, there is a bit of ridicule here, yet I’m now contractually doing two more of them’ – and knowing there would be more of that damnation to come.” Despite the struggles, Dornan doesn’t regret taking on the role of Christian Grey.
