We’ve all seen Jennifer Lawrence‘s viral ‘The New York Times‘ interview, where she was tagged as commitment-phobic, and that she almost backed out before marrying her now-husband, Cooke Maroney.

But in a later interview with Variety, Lawrence finally shed light on what she really meant and how her plain and simple words were misjudged by millions.

Lawrence explained in the Variety interview how the conversation was focused on her anxiety about commitment, marriage, and starting a family during a major transition in her life. It was not at all about her personal doubts about marrying her husband or starting a family with him.

Recalling that interview, Lawrence said, “In a New York Times article, I was talking about how some of my anxieties. You know, I made the movie right before I married. And then we had the pandemic two years later, I’m pregnant, we go back, and we make the rest of it. And I was talking about my relationship with commitment and an*iety and just how terrifying it was all of the past that I’ve had.”

Lawrence added that making ‘Causeway‘ during that emotional stage felt especially meaningful because the film reflected many of the fears she was dealing with in real life. She explained that both she and her character felt trapped by uncertainty and struggled with difficult choices about the future.

She added, “And then, I got married. I have the most wonderful husband in the world. I love our family. You know, we got pregnant with our son and went back. And I just have a completely different outlook on myself and how I am going to deal with commitment. I know I can do it, and I know that I love it. And I know I’m doing a good job, and that I’ll always try my hardest to do a good job.”

And that was all. But unfortunately, the NY Times completely ignored the full context and instead claimed she had almost backed out of her wedding. Reacting to those reports, she said, “And I, you know, I talked about that in the interview. And of course, everything that comes out, Jennifer Lawrence almost called off her wedding. Jennifer, and it’s like, are we really at this? We are so full of sh*t that you can’t even say. You know what, I was really anxious before marriage. I was scared.”

Lawrence also spoke honestly about the everyday worries that come with being a parent. She explained that becoming a mother has not erased her anxiety. Instead, it has brought a different set of questions and self-doubt that many parents experience.

She shared, “And everybody’s like, what? You know, like every day of being a mom, I feel awful. I feel guilty. I just feel, I’m playing with him, and I’m like, is this what he wants to be doing? Should we be outside? We’re outside. What if he’s cold? What if he’s gonna get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is this developing your brain enough? Oh yeah. My kid the only one on the block without, is that a milestone or is that a bad sign?

Jennifer Lawrence’s comments make it clear that she never questioned her marriage itself. Instead, she described the fear and uncertainty that came before taking a huge life step. Besides, those feelings changed after she found happiness in marriage and motherhood.
