Kanye West’s Yeezy Has To Pay $300K To A Creative Director For Failing To Respond To A Lawsuit

Kanye West was an influential personality who brought novelty to rap music. Along with that, he has impacted the fashion and footwear worlds with his famous collaborations with Balenciaga and Adidas. However, Ye lost all his credibility in bartering to be a narcissist hate monger, going on a spree to spew hate against Jews and African Americans. He lost a fortune while doing so when the industry ousted the ‘Donda’ rapper.

Since Paris Fashion Week 2022, Ye has been embroiled in several controversies. The hatred toward Jews has affected his professional life. But many legal lawsuits were under the surface of this one big controversy, which has reared its head now. The teachers from his educational institution, Donda Academy, have sued him for nonpayment of dues and code of conduct violations. Now, his fashion venture, Yeezy, has to pay a freelance director, Katelyn Mooney, after failing to respond to her lawsuit.

In September 2022, Kanye West released Yeezy’s futuristic visor-shaped sunglasses, titled YZY SHDZ. Katelyn Mooney, a Brooklyn-based creative director, was hired to do a photo shoot for the glasses. Yeezy called her to get ready for the photoshoot in two days, on September 11, 2022. The fashion giant agreed to pay her $110,000 for the shoot. However, they only paid her $15,000 for the photoshoot after the ‘White Lives Matter’ shirts debacle at Paris Fashion Week in October 2022.

Katelyn Mooney filed a lawsuit against Yeezy for nonpayment of the dues in the Manhattan Supreme Court in December 2022. The filing said that she was “fully responsible for every aspect of the photo shoot, including but not limited to hiring models, reserving studio space, procuring lighting, catering, pre-production, and post-production.” The filing states further that Katelyn sent an invoice of $110,000 to the company, and they reverted on September 28, 2022, that they would send the money once Ye approved the payment. However, even after seven months of filing the lawsuit, she did not receive her remaining pay.

After four months of filing the lawsuit, Judge Gerald Lebovits has ruled that Yeezy must pay Katelyn Mooney $300,000 after failing to respond to the lawsuit.

The creative director suffered a huge financial loss due to a delay in payment. Her lawsuit filing stated that “she has had to take out a significant loan and max out her credit cards just to cover her rent and other bills.”

Judge Lebovits called for a default ruling against Yeezy after no lawyers represented the company and responded to the court papers. As per the judgment, $95,000 covers the actual damages and $205,000 covers the statutory damages.
