Matt Damon nearly missed out on the role that helped define one of the greatest war films ever made. Before ‘Saving Private Ryan’ arrived in theaters in 1998, Damon auditioned for the film but failed to convince Steven Spielberg he was the right choice.
The rejection might have been the end of the story. Instead, a chance meeting arranged by Robin Williams gave Damon another opportunity. That brief encounter changed Spielberg’s mind and ultimately landed him the role of Private James Ryan.
Steven Spielberg Passed On Matt Damon’s Audition

Before ‘Good Will Hunting’ made him a star, Damon was still looking for his big Hollywood breakthrough. One of the projects he desperately wanted was ‘Saving Private Ryan’.
He submitted an audition tape and hoped for a callback, but sadly, it never came. Speaking with GQ back in 2021, Damon revealed that Spielberg already recognized him from ‘Courage Under Fire.’
For the role, Damon had undergone a dramatic weight loss transformation that ultimately worked against him during the ‘Saving Private Ryan’ casting process.

“I had put myself on tape, and I had read for him, and he didn’t call me back; I hadn’t been cast,” Damon recalled.
The problem was not his acting, as Spielberg remembered the performance. It was actually Damon’s appearance that led him to believe the actor was too thin for the role.
At the time, Spielberg wanted someone who looked like an ordinary young serviceman, and he had no intention for the audiences distracted by a major movie star. Damon actually fit that vision, but initially, Spielberg just did not realize it.
Robin Williams Brought Damon To Spielberg

By the time Damon accepted defeat, he had moved on to another project and started filming ‘Good Will Hunting’ in Boston with Ben Affleck and Robin Williams.

Williams already had a relationship with Spielberg after starring in ‘Hook.’ While Spielberg was in Boston shooting ‘Amistad,’ Williams decided to visit him on set and brought Damon and Affleck along.
“Robin took Ben and me to meet Steven because he knew it was never a bad thing to meet the greatest filmmaker of all time,” Damon said.
The visit was not intended to be an audition. Williams simply wanted the young writers and actors to meet one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, and that decision proved crucial.
The Conversation That Landed The Role

During the meeting, Spielberg recognized Damon immediately. He knew he had seen him somewhere before, but could not place him. When Damon mentioned ‘Courage Under Fire,’ everything clicked. “Spielberg said, that’s the exact type of person I’d want to play Private Ryan,” the actor recalled.
Spielberg had based that opinion on the version of Damon he saw in the film. What he did not realize was that the actor had lost around 40 pounds specifically for the role.
Damon quickly explained to Spielberg that his gaunt appearance was temporary and not his normal build. The explanation changed everything.
“It was only because Robin introduced me to him that he went, ‘Oh okay, you’re the kind of guy I’m looking for,’” Damon said.
Seeing Damon in person helped Spielberg realize his mistake, and soon afterward, he cast him as Private Ryan. The film became a critical and commercial success, and helped cement Damon’s rise in Hollywood. Looking back, the entire outcome hinged on a simple introduction that neither Damon nor Spielberg had planned.
Without Robin Williams, one of the most memorable casting stories of the 1990s might never have happened.
