Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage has revealed a surprising Hollywood cold war, claiming that director Christopher Nolan has refused to work with him for over two decades simply because he turned down a role in the 2002 film ‘Insomnia‘.
In a candid interview, the 62-year-old actor explained that rejecting a movie offer from the notoriously intense director had effectively severed their professional relationship. Cage claims that Nolan is one of several A-list filmmakers who take rejection personally and “don’t call back.”
Nicolas Cage Says Directors Get ‘Their Feelings Hurt’ and Never Call Back

While speaking to The New York Times, Cage said, “Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back. It’s happened a million times to me. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.”

The movie in question is ‘Insomnia‘, a psychological thriller starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. It is a remake of a Norwegian film about two detectives sent to a small town in Alaska to look into a murder. The movie is now seen as an important part of Nolan’s early work, but Cage says Nolan first wanted someone else in the cast.
Cage did not say which role he was offered. It could have been the troubled detective that Pacino played or the killer that Williams played. Either way, he says the fallout was immediate and never went away.
Since Cage said no 24 years ago, he claims Nolan has never offered him another part, including big movies like ‘The Dark Knight‘ trilogy, ‘Inception‘, and ‘Oppenheimer.’
The Only Director Who Forgave Nicolas Cage for Saying No

One director who did not hold a grudge was David O. Russell. Cage stars in Russell’s upcoming movie ‘Madden‘, where he plays the famous NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden. Cage said this only happened because Russell was willing to let go of an old no.

The actor added, “David O. Russell offered me a movie a million years ago. It was a good movie, and he offered it and I said no, and he’s the only director that I ever said no to who actually came back and offered me another movie.” Cage called Russell’s approach a sign of “class,” especially compared to the other directors who he says ghosted him.
He went on, “I didn’t want to say no to him again because I have great respect for his talent,” and admitted working on Madden was a “beautiful experience.”
Hollywood Grudges Might Close Doors on Cage’s Comeback

Cage’s comments suggest that for some directors, a no feels like a betrayal instead of just business. He talked about Paul Thomas Anderson, too, saying they worked on a project early on, but when “it didn’t work out,” Anderson never came back.
Cage’s career has seen a strong comeback lately with movies like ‘Dream Scenario‘ and ‘Longlegs‘. But his comments suggest that working with some of today’s most celebrated directors may no longer be possible.
Cage’s movie Madden is set to come out on November 26, 2026.
