‘Suits’ Actress Abigail Spencer Credits Meghan Markle For Show’s Sudden Success

‘Suits’ has achieved one of those rare feats where a show gains prominence much after it gets released. Though its production ended much earlier in 2019, it got a sudden jump in viewership after it hit the streaming platforms Netflix and Peacock. 2023 has been an exceptional year for the show as it continues to gain viewership each passing day.

Suits’ recorded 3.14 billion streaming minutes last summer, during the week of June 26 to July 2, after being added to the streaming platform. The show’s cast was star-studded with Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams in lead roles. Meghan Markle, who played the paralegal Rachel Zane on the show until Season 7 in 2017, left the series due to her engagement to Prince Harry. But now, one of her co-stars and friends have credited the Duchess of Sussex for the show’s sudden success.

Abigail Spencer, who played the character of Dana Scott on ‘Suits’ alongside Meghan Markle, believes that the Duchess of Sussex played a significant role in the show achieving a new streaming record four years after it ended. Spencer was a guest star on the series and had less screen time, but she worked with Markle closely.

Spencer was speaking on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, when she attributed the increased streaming figures to Meghan Markle’s popularity. “I think there’s several different things…And also Meghan’s loveliness, you know, that everyone is aware of her and her being on the show,” the actress said while speaking about ‘Suits’ popularity.

Spencer also speculated that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Netflix docuseries, released in 2022, may have influenced viewership since ‘Suits’ is available on the same streaming platform. She also theorized that Netflix may have strategically promoted the nine-season show during the writers’ and actors’ strike, taking advantage of the lack of new content. Besides, she also credited the show’s narrative for being a compelling one.

Meghan Markle meanwhile said she was unaware of the show’s popularity. She was surprised when she found out during a conversation in November 2023, “Isn’t that wild? It was great to work on, such a great cast and crew. We had a really fun time,” the Duchess said.

“But it’s hard to find a show you can binge-watch that many episodes of these days, so that could have something to do with it. But good shows are everlasting,” she added.

Earlier this month, Page Six reported that Meghan Markle declined an invitation to reunite with the ‘Suits’ cast at the Golden Globes on January 7 because of a prior commitment. During the awards show, her former co-stars presented the best TV drama award to the cast of ‘Succession’.
