‘The Hunger Games‘ star Josh Hutcherson didn’t expect a small comment about Taylor Swift during a press interview to turn into a full-blown online storm and intense backlash.
The situation not only sparked debate among fans but also pushed Hutcherson to the brink of cutting off his relationship with the internet.
What Josh Hutcherson Said About Taylor Swift During an Interview

During the press tour for Rachel Sennott’s HBO show “I Love L.A.,” for GQ, Hutcherson briefly returned to online interviews after a long absence. During a video segment with i-D Magazine, he joined co-star Jordan Firstman for a game of camera roll roulette. Things took a bad turn when Hutcherson pulled up a photo of himself and his mother at Swift’s Eras Tour in New Orleans.

He laughed and said, “My mom made me,” while explaining why he attended the concert. Firstman followed up by asking if he was a fan, which led to Hutcherson’s honest response.
He said, “I’m not a Swiftie. Very much not. No shade, all respect, but definitely not,” making it clear that he respected Swift but did not personally connect with her music.
That brief exchange quickly became a major online talking point. Hutcherson later reflected on how unexpectedly things escalated, explaining that he had simply answered a question without intending to offend anyone.

Speaking to GQ, Hutcherson addressed the situation and shared how the reaction affected him. He recalled how a simple comment sparked widespread discussion, and how people suddenly reacted in extreme ways. He said, “All of a sudden it garnered this, ‘F— him! He’s a monster! Destroy him!’” while also noting that some remarks even targeted his height.

He clarified again that he respects Swift and thinks she is great, but her music is just not his personal preference. That distinction, however, did not stop the online reaction from growing, which reinforced his discomfort with social media. He admitted, “That is why I don’t want to be online,” explaining his decision to step away once more.
Hutcherson also spoke about how staying offline helps him protect his work as an actor. He told GQ, “I don’t need that energy,” and explained that too much public visibility makes it harder for audiences to see him as different characters. He added that when people recognize you too much, they tend to say, “Oh, that’s Josh,” instead of connecting with the role.
Despite the online attention, Hutcherson continues to stand by his work in The Hunger Games, where he played Peeta Mellark. He spoke enthusiastically about the franchise, saying, “I could talk all day about ‘Hunger Games.’” He described the books as amazing and the films as fantastic, adding that they represent something meaningful even today.
