Matt LeBlanc became one of television’s biggest stars through ‘Friends‘ and later ‘Joey‘, but few fans knew about the personal struggle that led him to step away from Hollywood.

After ‘Joey‘ ended, LeBlanc planned to take a short break from acting. Instead, he disappeared from the spotlight for years as he focused on raising his daughter, Marina, during one of the most difficult periods of his life.

When ‘Joey‘ came to an end, Matt LeBlanc decided to take time away from acting. What was supposed to be a brief pause turned into a much longer break as he devoted his attention to his family, especially his daughter Marina.

As a baby, Marina was diagnosed with cortical dysplasia, a condition that affected her development and caused seizures. The actor later described that period as one of the darkest chapters of his life. Rather than continuing to chase new roles, he chose to stay close to home and support his daughter through her health challenges.

LeBlanc largely disappeared from public view during those years. While many actors quickly move from one project to the next, he decided that being present for his family mattered more than staying in the spotlight. Fortunately, Marina’s condition improved over time, allowing the actor to eventually consider returning to work.

After years away from acting, LeBlanc made a memorable comeback with the comedy series ‘Episodes’. The role reminded audiences why he had become such a beloved television star in the first place. The return proved to be a major success, and his performance earned him a Golden Globe Award in 2012 and another Golden Globe nomination in 2013.

Looking back on that period, LeBlanc explained just how exhausted he had become before stepping away. Speaking to the Daily Mirror in 2016, as reported by People, he said, “For years and years, I barely left the house. I was burnt out.” He added, “Most actors call their agents and say, ‘What’s going on?’ I’d call mine and say, ‘Please lose my number for a few years.’

During his time away from acting, LeBlanc realized that he enjoyed spending time with family and friends far more than worrying about his career. In a 2005 interview with The Times, he explained, “My favorite thing is not to work. I like to be with my family or my friends, to ride my bike. I do my thing, go home, and live my life.”

He also reflected on how becoming a father changed his outlook. “Maybe having a daughter, maybe that’s what it was, but life’s too short to be stressing out about your career. I don’t care as much as I used to,” he said.

LeBlanc has often joked about his love of relaxation. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2011, he admitted, “I hate to say it. My mom probably won’t be too proud. But my favorite thing to do is absolutely nothing. I would sit on the couch forever if you let me.”

The actor repeated that sentiment years later during a 2018 appearance on the Scandinavian talk show Skavlan. Speaking about his ideal pastime, he joked, “I’m great at it. I should be a professional nothing. Because it’s so easy, there’s no rules! What are you gonna do today? I’ll tell you: Nothing, pretty simple.” For LeBlanc, stepping away from fame was never about giving up on acting. It was about being there for his daughter and embracing a life that mattered more to him than Hollywood success.
