Hashimoto’s disease, also known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disease in which the immune cells target the thyroid gland assuming it is a foreign substance, and attack it. This leads to the gradual destruction of the thyroid gland. This eventually leads to hypothyroidism which can cause goiter along with weight gain, constipation, hair loss, and fatigue. This disease can lead to complications in the future such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and failure.

Hashimoto’s disease usually occurs due to a combination of factors such as genetics, autoimmune diseases in the family, and environmental factors. Treatment for Hashimoto’s disease is usually done by managing the thyroid hormone levels in the body. Hormone levels in the body are maintained by providing triiodothyronine and levothyroxine. This treatment goes on for the rest of the patient’s life. This disease is seen more in women than men but it is seen more commonly in middle-aged men.

She said that she suffered from inflammation and water retention prior to the diagnosis and that the treatment has helped her body and the healthier lifestyle is helping her combat the disease. Hadid has also mentioned people’s concerns about her weight, “I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better.”

She also added saying, “(I am) still learning and growing with my body every day, as everyone is.” She disclosed in 2016 that she has been on medication for two years to cope with the disease. Gigi Hadid is not the only celebrity suffering from Hashimoto’s disease. Other celebs like Gina Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Victoria Justice, and Kim Cattrall are also battling with the disease. Thyroid issues are very common today and one must get checked for thyroid-related issues as untreated thyroid-related diseases can cause further serious health complications.
