According to his Facebook, Dawit is an Ethiopian native who was born in Addis Ababa to an American father and an Ethiopian mother. The music producer has lived all over the world in countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan because of his father’s work with the US government. John Eklund, the father of Eklund, was a longstanding US Peace Corps employee, and Yeshi Eklund, his mother was an entrepreneur.
The International Community School of Addis Ababa is a school in Ethiopia where Dawit finished his high school studies. He attended and eventually graduated from George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he studied international development in Africa. With Sami Yenigun and Joyce Lin, Dawit established the record label 1432 R in 2014. According to its website, the independent record company, which is situated in Malia’s former neighborhood of Washington, DC, focuses on experimental electronic music.

Malia was last linked to Rory Farquharson, a friend from Harvard University who she began seeing in 2017 and later broke up with.
