The DC Universe may be just starting, but James Gunn is already hinting at the arrival of some big villains. The DC Studios co-CEO recently set the internet abuzz with speculation after answering a fan question on social media about a number of iconic DC characters.
This included Darkseid, Ultraman, General Zod, Doomsday, Black Adam, and Doctor Fate. Rather than revealing specific names, Gunn simply replied that two of them would appear “in not too long.”
Darkseid Appears To Be The Most Appropriate Candidate

Gunn’s comment was brief, but it got fans excited and on a mission to find out which strong characters might be next to stir up the emerging DCU. Of the names listed, Darkseid seems to be one of the best candidates. One of DC’s most legendary villains, the ruler of Apokolips, has recently been embellished with some developments behind the scenes that have only reinforced that theory.

The upcoming animated ‘Mister Miracle’ series will also be part of the official DCU continuity. The series’ creator, Tom King, has already confirmed that Darkseid will be part of the project. That’s just one of the few characters on the list that has a confirmed association with an upcoming DCU release.
Darkseid’s eventual appearance is more of a when than an if for many fans. With the expansion of the franchise, one of DC’s ultimate cosmic threats would be a natural next step. Then there’s the fact that a universe with the title “Gods and Monsters” just seems like it’s missing something if Darkseid isn’t there somewhere in the background.
Could Ultraman Also Return To The DCU?

The second likely candidate may be Ultraman. After Superman, the villain’s fate was intentionally left ambiguous, leaving plenty of room for a future comeback. Instead of being killed off, Ultraman vanished mysteriously, and many fans hoped that he might make a comeback as part of a larger Crime Syndicate plot.

This would bring the DCU’s evil multiversal counterparts and would really put future heroes at a much higher risk. Others on the list appear less likely in the near future. Characters, like General Zod and Doomsday, have been prominently used in recent live-action ventures.
Whereas Black Adam is still strongly connected to the previous DC film universe. For now, Gunn isn’t giving any answers. However, his latest tease indicates the DCU is set to add a lot more villains to its roster. However, if Darkseid and Ultraman are coming, then heroes from the DCU might soon be in danger they’ve never seen before.
