DC fans may not have to wait much longer to learn who will wear the cape and cowl in James Gunn‘s new DC Universe. The filmmaker has offered a promising update on the search for the DCU’s Batman, suggesting that the casting announcement is not too far away.
More importantly, Gunn has explained why he wants to approach the role differently from previous Batman movies.
DCU Batman Will Be Around Superman’s Age

With David Corenswet already established as Superman, the next major question is who will become his eventual ally in the DCU. Gunn’s latest comments suggest that finding the right actor matters more than choosing the biggest Hollywood name.

“One of the things that excites me about casting Batman is being able to pick a Batman who’s actually the best actor for that role,” Gunn explained. “Superman’s have always been chosen based on who the best actor for that role is. And for some reason, Batman’s are always chosen as movie stars.”
Gunn appears determined to prioritize performance and suitability over celebrity status, potentially giving a less obvious candidate the opportunity to become the next Dark Knight. He also offered an important clue about the age of his new Batman.
“Roughly, Batman and Superman are around the same age. I don’t think they’re drastically different ages. They’re future best pals, contemporaries,” Gunn said. Corenswet is 33, so DCU’s Batman will likely be young rather than a significantly older mentor figure. This could help establish a dynamic between the two heroes that feels closer to a partnership between equals.
Gunn Explains His DCU Roadmap And Its Diamond Characters

Beyond Batman, Gunn has reiterated his broader vision for the franchise. He described Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as DC’s “diamond characters,” while highlighting the potential to elevate other heroes into major attractions.

Gunn explained that the original eight-to-ten-year roadmap covered more than just interconnected storylines. It also included filmmaker freedom, different tones and ratings, and developing characters such as Krypto, John Stewart, and Peacemaker.
That approach could be crucial to the DCU’s long-term success. Rather than making every project feel identical, Gunn wants a universe where smaller characters can shine alongside its biggest heroes. With Batman’s arrival approaching, the franchise may be preparing for its next defining chapter.
