James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’ has hit a major milestone: principal photography is now complete. That’s more than just another production update for fans of the new DC Universe. ‘Superman’s sequel is coming off the fence and into the realm of production where Gunn and his crew can now make a difference in the final product.

James Gunn confirmed the news on Instagram, posting behind-the-scenes photos celebrating the wrap. One featured Nicholas Hoult, who reprises his role as Lex Luthor, having fun swimming after the last shot. Another featured Gunn alongside members of what he called the movie’s “brain trust.”

It is always interesting to see a production come to an end like this. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ has been months in the making with set photos, theories, and speculations. The film is now one step closer to becoming a film audiences can actually watch.

While Gunn did not reveal any major story details, the location in his photographs immediately caught fans’ attention. The forest and open landscape are very similar to the strange alternate universe, Salvation, that was introduced in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2.

That connection is especially intriguing, as Lex Luthor is attached to the story. ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 saw Hoult back as Lex with Rick Flag Sr., and the season ended with Peacemaker stuck in Salvation. Can ‘Man of Tomorrow’ pick up the momentum?

It is certainly possible, although nothing has been officially confirmed. Gunn may simply have been filming an unrelated sequence in a location that happens to resemble Salvation. Still, the timing makes the theory difficult to ignore.

Brainiac Could Make Salvation Even More Important

Brainiac is the biggest reason that the theory works. Lars Eidinger will portray the iconic DC bad guy, and Gunn has already established that ‘Man of Tomorrow’ will go beyond the relatively earthly conflicts of ‘Superman’ and expand the DCU.

Brainiac might be able to trap or research Superman and other heroes in the strange dimension if Salvation is involved in the story. There is also a link to a DC Comics story called Salvation Run that features Lex Luthor and a secret world of dangerous super villains.

Gunn could easily draw on that material and add his own twist to it. For the time being, the Salvation theory is just a theory. However, now that filming is over, fans will not have to wait forever for answers. The first trailer could finally reveal whether Gunn’s mysterious forest location was hiding a much bigger DCU connection all along.
