The DC Universe is already moving on from Superman, and one character looks poised to be much more important than fans had originally thought.

With recent news about 2027’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’, it’s now confirmed that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will not only be making a short appearance in the franchise going forward, but may actually be one of the emotional hubs.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ Might Push Supergirl Into The Heart Of The DC Universe

This is particularly exciting because of the differences between it and classic versions of Kara Zor-El. She’s harsher, emotionally wounded, and much less polished than David Corenswet’s hopeful Superman. That dynamic may prove to be one of the best in the DCU.

Recently, James Gunn announced that Alcock is already working on scenes for ‘Man of Tomorrow’, which immediately led to speculation about her role in the film. Gunn didn’t comment on the specifics of the story, but this early involvement of Supergirl is telling.

DC Studios has also stated that Kara is “a major part” of the franchise’s future, and that’s a good thing. Her introduction in Superman already suggested that she was someone who had seen much more pain than Clark Kent.

On the surface, it was hilarious to show up at the Fortress of Solitude in a state of intoxication. However, it also showed a hero dealing with deep trauma in very human ways.

The sequel is said to feature Brainiac as the main villain, which significantly ups the ante for Supergirl. He might push Kara further than Superman could. Brainiac has a direct connection to the destruction of Krypton and the bottled city of Kandor in many DC stories.

This is not merely another invasion of aliens for Kara; it can be a very personal experience. That angle is even more interesting when you take into account the build-up in ‘Supergirl’. Kara was trapped in Argo City during the collapse of Krypton and observed the deaths of all those around her over time.

That kind of trauma makes for a very different hero than Superman. And that’s what makes her interesting. Clark is a symbol of hope and optimism, while Kara is a character who is still grappling with the loss. Brainiac brings those feelings to the surface in ‘Man of Tomorrow’, and Supergirl could easily take over the whole thing.
