Zack Snyder Hints at ‘Justice League’ Return in a Way No One Expected

In Short
  • Zack Snyder confirms plans for sequels to 'Justice League' in alternative formats, not live-action.
  • Creative discussions are underway for animated films or graphic novels under the "DC Elseworlds" label.
  • Snyder expresses enthusiasm for completing the story, regardless of the medium, amid fan demand for the 'Snyderverse'.

Nearly five years after the release of Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League‘, the filmmaker has broken his silence, confirming that the long-rumored second and third chapters of his superhero epic are not just wishful thinking.

However, in a pivot that could redefine how Hollywood handles unfinished franchises, Snyder reveals that the end of his saga is being plotted for the page or the animation stand, not the silver screen.

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zack Snyder addressed the elephant in the room regarding the future of the “Snyderverse.” While a live-action sequel starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck remains impossible due to the actors’ ages and James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe (DCU), Snyder confirmed that creative discussions are actively underway to finish the story in a different medium.

We’ve absolutely talked about it quite a bit,” Snyder told host Josh Horowitz. He didn’t hold back about wanting to finish the story, no matter what form it takes. “We live in a world where all that’s possible, and whatever form it would take… that would be amazing,” Snyder added.

Why Live-Action ‘Justice League’ Sequels are Not Happening

For years, fans have rallied under the banner #RestoreTheSnyderverse, hoping Warner Bros. would finance a massive live-action sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2021 ‘Justice League‘. However, the landscape of DC entertainment has shifted dramatically. With Peter Safran and James Gunn now leading DC Studios, the old regime’s continuity has been officially closed.

Snyder’s recent comments show he accepts that. He said his planned sequel, which would have shown the dark “Knightmare” future from Batman v Superman, could easily continue outside the main movie universe.

By putting his sequels under the “DC Elseworlds” label, which is for stories outside the main DCU, Snyder could make an R-rated animated movie or a fancy graphic novel without messing with Gunn’s ‘Superman‘ or ‘The Brave and the Bold‘.

‘Justice League’ 2 and 3: Animated Movie or Comic Book?

Snyder’s words, “whatever form it would take,” got fans guessing. A comic book or an animated movie for Netflix or Paramount+ makes the most sense money-wise. But Snyder jokingly threw out a wild idea.

Whatever form it would take… if it’s a Broadway musical, it would be amazing,” he said. That pretty much sums up his new way of thinking. The medium doesn’t matter as long as he gets to finish the story.

This isn’t the first time Snyder talked about this. He’s said before that he knows exactly what happens in ‘Justice League‘ 2 and 3, including Batman dying and the heroes finally beating Darkseid. Turning those storyboards into an animated film is a simple step on paper, even if it means a lot emotionally.

Fan Demand Keeps Snyderverse Alive

The timing makes sense. March 2026 marks five years since Zack Snyder’s Justice League came out. Fans have been posting about it a lot on social media, and Snyder himself put up cryptic pictures of the Wayne Manor set on Instagram.

Snyder has moved on to his Rebel Moon movies for Netflix, but he called the DC universe a “weed that just won’t die.” It’s a passion project he won’t let go. Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t officially said yes to anything yet. However, Snyder saying “we’ve talked about it quite a bit” is the strongest proof so far that the ‘Justice League‘ will return, just not in a movie theater.

That would be amazing,” Snyder said again. For millions of fans, the only question now is whether that “amazing” turns into an actual greenlit project.
