Better known by his nickname “Shaq,” is a former professional basketball player from the United States who now works as a sports analyst for the television show Inside the NBA.
Shaq Speaks Up About His Divorce
Shaquille O’Neal was speaking up about his divorce from ex-wife Shaunie O’Neal, which happened in 2011. The NBA icon discussed his career, relationships, and regrets on Tuesday’s episode of The Pivot Podcast. The 50-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers player also explained why he holds himself responsible for the end of his marriage to Shaunie, whom he married in 2002 and divorced in 2009.
“I’ve never talked about this, and I’m glad you guys asked because I don’t mind talking about this, but I was bad,” Shaq stated. “She was awesome. She really was. It was all me.”
Though the basketball pro said they didn’t need to further discuss “what he was doing,” he made clear, “I wasn’t protecting her and protecting those vows.”
The Hall of Famer further added, “Sometimes when you live that double life, you get caught up. I’m not going to say it was her; it was all me.”
Shaq talked about how much effort his ex-wife put into their relationship before they divorced. “She did exactly what she was supposed to do: gave me beautiful kids, take care of the house, take care of the corporate stuff. It was just all me. Sometimes, when you make a lot of mistakes like that, you can’t really come back from that.”
Shaquille O’Neal Opens Up About His Ex-Wife Dating
Shaunie, 47, and pastor Keion Henderson began dating in February 2020 and announced their engagement late last year. In November, the Basketball Wives star told PEOPLE, “This love is FOREVER, and I’m honored and overjoyed to do forever with him.”
On the podcast, O’Neal stated, “She’s happy now.” Adding more, “She’s about to marry a fine, young gentleman and I’m happy for her.”
the couple has four children from their marriage, Shareef, 22, Amirah, 20, Shaqir, 19, and Me’arah, 15. Shaunie also has a son from a previous relationship, Myles, who is 24 years old.
